Garmin Express Quits Unexpectedly on a Mac

Garmin Express™ software may randomly close or quit while in use.

While Launching or Opening Garmin Express, or During Updates in Garmin Express the Following Errors or Behaviors May Occur:

  • Garmin Express closes or quits unexpectedly.

  • The error message Garmin Express has stopped working appears on the screen.

  • The error message An unexpected error has occurred and Garmin Express must close appears on the screen.

  • The Garmin Express window does not appear on the screen, and no error message is displayed.


Click on the Steps Below for Instructions to Resolve these Errors:  


1. Ensure the Latest Version of Garmin Express is Installed

Download and reinstall the latest version of Garmin Express from the link below. Garmin Express is up to date if the message "Garmin Express is already installed" is displayed.

See  if you are not able to locate the Garmin Express file after downloading it.


2. Restart the Computer

Note: Shutting down, pressing the power button, or closing the lid on a notebook computer may not effectively restart the computer on some operating systems. Follow the instructions below to ensure that the computer is completely restarted.

MacOS/OS X

  1. Click the Apple icon in the menu bar
  2. Click Restart...
  3. Click Restart to confirm

3. Fully Uninstall and Reinstall Garmin Express

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, Garmin Express will need to be fully uninstalled, then reinstalled on your Mac.

4. Create a New Administrative User on the Mac

NOTE: If the issue is resolved by creating a new administrator profile, reach out to Apple Support for further assistance with the original user profile. 

1. Click the  Apple icon in the upper left corner, then System Preferences.

2. Click Users & Groups.

3. If the  lock icon in the lower-left corner is closed, click on it to unlock User Preferences.

4. If prompted, enter the administrator username and password, then click Unlock. Contact Apple support if you are not able to remember the username or password, or if your computer will not accept them.

 5. Click the  add button in the lower-left corner to add a user profile.

6. Click the  selection icon and select the Administrator user type.

7. Enter the new user information, then click Create User.

8. Click Allow user to administer this computer.

This new administrator profile may need to be used for Garmin Express until the original profile can be fixed. You can delete the profile using instructions from Apple Support.
