Lending an inReach Mini 2 Device

NOTE: This FAQ does not apply to inReach® Professional accounts. Professional inReach accounts allow administrators to create multiple users and assign devices to those users.

Important Notes

When loaning out an inReach® Mini 2 device that has been activated with an inReach Personal subscription, we recommend being aware of the following:

  • All inReach services from the borrowed or shared device are still tied to the account of the lender and all inReach subscription charges will continue to go to the lender.

  • Do not change the email address on the account or other owner information. This can cause issues when trying to return the account information to the original owner. Instead, the Emergency Notes section of the account can be updated to include details for the borrower (name, dates they are using it, their emergency contacts, etc.). For more details, see - Adding or Updating Emergency Notes on an inReach Account.

  • From the Account page of the Garmin Explore™ website, be sure to uncheck "Include My Name As A Signature" under SMS Message Configuration. If this is left checked, every message sent will have the account holder's name attached. For more details, see - Editing inReach SMS Message Coordinates, Map, and Signature Settings.

  • The inReach Mini 2 device can only be paired with one phone at a time and a data connection is needed to sign in to any apps when pairing the handheld.

  • If the inReach Mini 2 has been used with the Garmin Messenger™ app, the owner should delete their Garmin Messenger account while the inReach Mini 2 is being borrowed to prevent any potential messaging issues for the borrower. For more details, see - Deleting the Garmin Messenger Account and App.

  • Any additional Search And Rescue (SAR) benefit coverage applies to the account owner and does not cover the borrower. If the borrower wishes to have SAR coverage, they will need to purchase or use their own benefit coverage. For more details and purchase options, visit - SAR Insurance.

Pairing a Borrowed inReach Mini 2 Device With a Smartphone

Satellite messaging, SOS, and other inReach features can be accessed directly on a borrowed device, but the borrower also has the option of pairing the inReach Mini 2 device with a compatible Garmin app on their smartphone for added convenience.

Garmin Explore App

The inReach Mini 2 device can be paired as a Guest Device in the Garmin Explore app. This allows the borrower to use their own Garmin Explore account to sync waypoints, tracks, routes, activities, or courses with the device while still having access to basic satellite messaging functions and SOS. To use the Guest Device feature, the lendee can log into the Garmin Explore app with their own account information and pair the inReach Mini 2.

For pairing instructions, see - Pairing an inReach Mini 2 With the Garmin Explore App.

For more details on using the Guest Device feature once the inReach Mini 2 has been paired, see - Garmin Explore App Guest Device.

Garmin Messenger App

It is not possible to pair an inReach Mini 2 device with the Garmin Messenger app without signing in with the owner's account credentials.
