Understanding the Satellite Page on Outdoor Handhelds

The Satellite page on outdoor handhelds displays satellite acquisition data and related information like position accuracy, current GPS-based elevation, and UTC time at the device's current location. 


Satellite Page Definitions on Outdoor Handhelds

Coordinates

Displays the devices current GPS position.

Red Box Around Coordinates on the Satellite Page

GPS Accuracy

Displays the distance of closeness to the actual position. See Related for more information on improving the accuracy.

GPS-Based Elevation

Satellites Acquired

Satellites that have color indicate acquired satellites the device is receiving signal from.

Satellites without color indicate satellites that have not acquired signal.

Cardinal Direction

Red Boxes Around Cardinal Directions

Compass Heading

The direction the device is pointing at any given moment.

Satellite Signal Strength

Indicates the strength of each satellites signal provided to the device.

Psuedo-Random Noise Code (PRN-Code)

Allows the receiver to identify which satellite it is receiving signal from.

Additional Satellite Networks (GLONASS & GALILEO)

Multi-GNSS devices, when enabled, display additional satellite networks acquired either on a second screen or a second row of signal strength bars on the same page, depending on the model.

Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS)

On compatible devices, with WAAS enabled, satellites with PRN-Codes 45, 48, and 51 may be present on the satellite page indicating the handheld has acquired a geostationary satellite relaying GPS signal correction data. Satellites actively receiving WAAS corrections display a "D" above the PRN-Codes below the Signal Strength Bars.
