How Does the Varia Radar Work?

Varia Radar Tail Lights have a radio transmitter that emits radar signals behind your bike and a receiver that detects radar signals reflected by moving objects behind you. It analyzes the reflected radar signal to identify vehicles and determine their distance and approach speed. The radar sensitivity is optimized to ensure the best possible performance in detecting approaching vehicles since they present the greatest danger to cyclists. The information compiled by the Varia Radar is then wirelessly transmitted to the dedicated Varia Radar Display Unit (RDU) or a compatible Garmin device, alerting the cyclist about the approaching vehicle until the threat has passed.

What Type of Vehicles Will the Varia Radar Identify?

The Varia Radar Tail Light can detect automobiles, motorcycles, and even other cyclists depending on how well they reflect a radar signal.

When Will the Threat Level Turn Red?

The RDU or compatible Garmin device will change the threat level to red, indicating high awareness, under the following conditions:

  • A fast vehicle is detected (any vehicle faster than 90km/h (55mph) relative to the bike or any vehicle significantly faster than the average vehicle speed).

  • A slow-moving cyclist is being tracked behind you and a new vehicle is detected in the distance.
