Using inReach with SMS (Short Message Service)
Messages sent to or from a SMS phone may fail to send or receive correctly if the SMS provider for the phone is not supported or if the wrong mobile phone number format is used. If you cannot successfully send or receive SMS messages while using your inReach device, follow the steps below to troubleshoot the issue.
Troubleshooting SMS messages:
- Confirm the inReach device can send or receive messages by sending a message to testinreach@garmin.com while the unit is outside in a clear view of open sky.
- Leave the inReach device outside for 20-40 minutes after sending the message to confirm the unit is able to receive a reply.
- Send an SMS text message and an e-mail to a recipient, preferably yourself. Prior to sending, ensure the mobile phone number is in the following format when entered in the Earthmate app or inReach hand held: +[Country Code][SMS number]
- Reply to either message that is received to test the response is being received on the inReach device as well.
- This is to test whether the issue persists and if the recipient can receive e-mail messages.
- If the inReach is unable to send messages to or receive messages from the phone but can send and receive e-mail correspondence, contact Product Support and please be able provide the information below. To contact Product Support based on the inReach product you are using.

Successful SMS message delivery and receipt is contingent on many factors including but not limited to local restrictions and laws related to international SMS, policies of individual SMS providers, and support for SMS carriers from the inReach SMS provider. Garmin will work with the inReach SMS provider to attempt to work through or around any issues however successful message delivery or receipt is not guaranteed as defined in sections 1.4 and 4.5 of the inReach Terms & Conditions.
