Getting the Most from Your Garmin Flight Deck

Garmin avionics provide a large number of situational awareness features to help you manage your flights. While most of the features of Garmin products are relatively easy to use and interpret, some of the features take a deeper look and perhaps a bit of practice before you can expect to get the most from your system.

While a complete review of your Garmin Pilot’s Guide for your installed equipment is always recommended, and will most likely answer many of your questions, your Garmin Aviation training team recognizes that getting your hands on the devices and putting them through their paces is the best way to learn new features.

If you decide to explore the feature set of your system yourself, we recommend concentrating on one or two new features per flight, and that you bring along an instructor who is qualified in the system. This will give you the chance to explore the equipment while you have a second set of eyes to scan for traffic and provide some system guidance. If you can’t find an experienced Garmin instructor, bring another pilot along to provide this second set of eyes.

Another way to build expertise in your system is to take advantage of the professionally developed eLearning material available on flyGarmin.com. These courses thoroughly explore each system and many of the courses include both an example flight and scripted guidance that shows you how to use Garmin PC Trainers (and iPad Trainers) to “fly” a scenario. The scenarios are designed to help you exercise features used on most flights. The full list of eLearning courses is shown below:

While the eLearning courses can provide you with comprehensive knowledge about your system, it is still important to get your hands on the devices to build proficiency. Instructor led training is the next step in your learning journey, and Garmin provides these on a schedule both in Olathe, Kansas, and regionally. Other training opportunities can be arranged based on instructor availability. Check out the Pilot Training Catalog linked below for a full description:
