Garmin has changed the power cable design for the zūmo 396 to no longer require a user-replaceable fuse. It now includes a re-settable fuse built into the cable's black box. Reset the fuse by temporarily removing all power to the mounting cable if the device isn't powering on or charging while in the mount. This change was made to provide a slimmer cable and allow for easier installation.

zūmo 396 or zūmo XT Frozen or Not Powering On
See below for troubleshooting steps if your automotive device won't power on. See Why is the Battery on my Brand New Automotive Device Not Charged? if you are using your device for the first time.
Reset the device by following the instructions below if the device's screen has frozen.
NOTE: Temperature can affect your device's ability to power on or charge properly. See the Environment section below for more information.
This Video is a Quick and Easy way to Learn about Charging your Device.
Verify the Motorcycle Power Cable is Installed Properly
1. Attach your device to the motorcycle mount using installation instructions in the owner's manual
2. Ensure the retention screw is used and screwed in properly to hold the power cable in place
3. Drive normally with the device connected to power for at least 30 minutes
The device should power on after taking these steps.
Remove Any Memory Cards in the Device
Format the memory card if this resolves your issue.
For instructions go to the Support Center and enter the product name or the serial number of your device.
Once your device is selected, search for "Formatting a microSD/SD Memory Card".
Reset the Device
A soft reset can help by forcing the device to reboot if the device still does not power on, or if the screen has become frozen and will not power off.
To Perform a Soft Reset:
- Connect the device to the motorcycle mount.
- An A/C adapter or automotive power cable may also be used.
- Use the motorcycle power cable if the problem persists.
- An A/C adapter or automotive power cable may also be used.
- Press and hold the power button and slowly count to 30.
The device should now turn on. Leave the device connected to power to give the battery time to charge.
Note: The zūmo® XT GPS navigator may not power on properly if a 64 GB microSD card is inserted and hasn't been formatted. Power the device on before inserting the memory card and a prompt will appear to format the card.

Try Powering Device with USB Cable
Plug the device into an AC Adapter or computer using the USB port located directly on the body of the device. If the device powers on, this could indicate a problem with the wiring or mount.
Why is This Happening?
An issue where your Garmin device will not turn on, is frozen, has a dead battery, or has a black screen can have several different causes:
Dead Battery
A device will not turn on if it has an empty or "dead" battery.
This can be resolved by charging the battery.
This is not always as simple as connecting the device to any cable or power source.
Environment
The environment the device is used in can affect its ability to properly receive power.
Software Problem
The device may have run into a software "bug," "glitch," or another problem if the device "freezes" on a single screen and will not respond to your touch.
Since all electronic devices do a large number of tasks and calculations every second, it is always possible for the device to get stuck at one point or another while in use.
This problem may be solved with a software update.
