eTrex H Time and Date are Incorrect

Garmin has identified an issue with eTrex® H outdoor handheld firmware that causes the time and date to be incorrect. A software update is available that resolves this concern. Due to the age of the eTrex H handheld and the complexity of updating, it is not recommended to update unless you specifically need accurate date and time. If you don't already own the hardware required (see below) it is recommended to look at newer products like the eTrex 10 handheld before considering spending time and money on updating the eTrex H handheld.

What happens if I do not update the eTrex H handheld?

  • Position, velocity, and other navigation data will still work
  • Waypoint, route and track data will be accurate but will show the wrong date and time
  • The time and date will appear wrong on eTrex H handheld
  • Features like Hunt & Fish or Sun/Moon will be incorrect

Important details for updating the eTrex H software due to the age of the device

  • The eTrex H handheld uses a serial port connection cable.
  • USB to RS232 Converter Cable is required to connect the serial port connection cable to a modern computer
    • There are no drivers provided by Garmin for 64 bit computers (Most modern computers, starting with Windows 7, are 64-bit)
    • There is no compatibility with Mac computers

Once you have the necessary cables you can follow the instructions here to update the eTrex H handheld.
