Connecting an AIS device to a GPSMAP 3000 series chartplotter over NMEA 0183
The GPSMAP 3000 series chartplotters have the ability to display Automatic Identification System (AIS) if an AIS receiver is connected to the chartplotter over NMEA 0183 High Speed.
To connect the two devices together, the AIS device is required to be connected to Port 1 of the GPSMAP 3000 series chartplotter. Here are some instructions to help you wire the two devices together:
- Connect the Blue (Data Out) wire of the GPSMAP 3000 series device to the NMEA In (or Data In) wire of the AIS device
- If the AIS device has both a + (positive) and - (negative) NMEA In wire, connect the Blue wire of the GPSMAP 3000 series device to the + (positive) NMEA In wire of the AIS. Connect the - (negative) wire of the AIS to the common ground of the boat.
- Connect the Brown (Data In) wire of the GPSMAP 3000 series device to the NMEA Out (or Data Out) wire of the AIS device
- If the AIS device has both a + (positive) and - (negative) NMEA Out wire, connect the Brown wire of the GPSMAP 3000 series device to the + (positive) NMEA Out wire of the AIS. Connect the - (negative) wire of the AIS to the common ground of the boat.
After connecting the two devices together as described above, follow these instructions to ensure that Port 1 of the GPSMAP 3000 series device is set to NMEA High Speed. This is the language required to allow communication between the GPSMAP 3000 series device and the AIS.
- Power on the GPSMAP 3000 series chartplotter
- Press and Hold the ADJ/MENU button for a few seconds to access the Main Menu
- Highlight the System tab on the left side of the screen
- If the System tab is not visible, keep scrolling down until it appears
- Press the Right arrow button four times to highlight the Comm tab at the top of the screen
- Press the Down arrow button one time to highlight the setting titled Serial Port 1
- Press the Enter button
- Highlight NMEA High Speed
- Press the Enter button
As long as the devices are wired together as described above, and the GPSMAP 3000 series chartplotter is set to NMEA High Speed, the two devices should be able to communicate with each other.
