Unstructured Riding With Tacx Trainers

When using the Tacx Training app or the Tacx Desktop app, an activity can only be recorded by following a structured workout. These applications do not allow you to record a “free ride” by simply pressing start then riding without following a workout. Users can create a relatively lax workout quickly, but this does require selecting at least a few Targets. Below are some ways to accomplish this:

Record an Unstructured Ride With a Garmin Edge or Compatible Cycling Computer

  1. Pair the trainer as "Indoor Trainer"1 to a compatible Garmin Edge or ANT+ or BLE compatible cycling computer. Refer to your owner's manual for instructions.

  2. Press start on the Edge or compatible cycling computer.

  3. Begin riding as desired.

    • Resistance will change based upon the rider manually shifting.

    • Some resistance is created from the flywheel of a smart trainer.

    • A FLUX Series or NEO Series Smart Trainer will provide speed, distance, cadence, and power data to the cycling computer.1


Create a Simple Workout in the Tacx Cloud

Workouts created in the Tacx Cloud can be used in the Tacx Training app or the Tacx Desktop app. To create a workout:

  1. Sign in to the Tacx Cloud.

  2. Select Create Workout.

  3. Select Slope.

  4. Select a Target (Time or Distance).

  5. Select Continue.

  6. From here you can adjust the incline to Slope 0.0% or any degree you prefer.

  7. Select Save.

Following this type of workout allows you to record an activity without having to set power guidelines, allowing fluctuations in power output as desired.


Perform a Manual Workout Using Slope or Power on the Tacx Training App

Slope and Power workouts are simple workout options that allow you to set a specific grade % of a climb or wattage, respectively, where the trainer matches the set resistance. This number can be adjusted manually at any time during the workout using + / - buttons within the workout dashboard.

  1. Open the Tacx Training app.

  2. Pair your Tacx smart trainer under Settings > Device Manager.

  3. Return to the Dashboard on the app.

  4. Select either Power to choose a specific wattage to use or Slope to choose a specific Grade % of a climb to use.

  5. Increase or decrease the values by using the - or + buttons.

  6. Select Start Now to begin your workout.

  7. You can adjust the setting during the workout by selecting the - or + again, as needed.

  8. Once finished, select Stop and then Save to record the workout to your account.


Compatible Edge models include any Edge with power meter compatibility. For Edge models that do not have an "Indoor Trainer" sensor option, be sure to pair the trainer both as a power sensor and as a speed/cadence sensor.
