Choosing Tachometer Source with GHP Autopilot

If utilizing tach as a speed source, the GHP autopilots will require a tach reading from the engine to function.

NMEA 2000 tach sources are preferred for the simplest installation, but third party Maretron J1939 Canbus, Volvo NMEA 2000 gateway, or other converters may be necessary to hook up a digital tach source to the NMEA 2000 network.

If no NMEA 2000 tach information is available, the best way to hook an analog tachometer source to the autopilot is typically to connect to the tach gauges on the dash. If the analog tach source comes from an alternator, 24V source, or ignition coil, an optional tachometer filter accessory, with part number 010-11399-00, will need to be connected in series with the tach inputs.

For diesel engines, a third party flywheel tooth counter from Caterpillar or Cummins can be installed to serve as a tach source.

For additional information about tach sources, please contact the manufacturer of the engine.
