Using an inReach Mini 2 Without a Subscription

The inReach® Mini 2 satellite communicator has a few functions that work without an inReach subscription plan, but there are a number of communication features that require an active plan. See below for more information on both.

When you power on your inReach Mini 2 communicator, select your language and you will reach a message prompting you to activate the device. From this screen, select Skip with the OK button and the inReach Mini 2 device is ready to use.

Communication Features Requiring an Active Subscription


Using Garmin Explore™ App With an inReach Mini 2 Communicator That Does Not Have a Subscription

The Garmin Explore app works together with the inReach Mini 2 communicator and the Garmin Explore website. Before you can use the Garmin Explore website, the inReach Mini 2 communicator must be registered by pairing it with a phone or tablet.   • Pair with the inReach Mini 2 communicator
  • Sync data between the Garmin Explore website and inReach Mini 2 communicator
  • Create and edit waypoints and courses
  • Review recorded tracks and activities
  • Download maps to your mobile device
  • Organize user data into Collections
  • Access online device support

Garmin Explore Website Features That Do Not Require an Active Subscription

  • Sync data to and from the Garmin Explore app
  • Create and edit waypoints and routes
  • Review recorded tracks and activities
  • Measure distance on the map
  • Organize data into Collections
  • Import data from outside sources
  • Export data to be saved elsewhere as a backup, and/or used with third-party applications

NOTE: Garmin BaseCamp™ software may also be used to save waypoints and activities to a computer. Keep in mind, the inReach Mini 2 communicator records activities and those are converted to tracks in the BaseCamp software. If an inReach subscription is activated for the device, it will then also allow for managing the account and subscription, viewing conversation history, creating and syncing Contacts/ Check-In Messages (formerly known as Preset Messages)/Quick Text messages through the Garmin Explore app, setting up MapShare, and linking social media accounts. Activating an inReach Subscription Later

If you decide you want to activate an inReach subscription, you can log in to the Garmin Explore website with your current account and do so from there. For steps, see - How to Activate an inReach Mini 2 .
