echoMAP Chartplotter Software Update

Garmin often releases updates to improve performance and correct operational issues.

This article applies to the following series of marine chartplotters. If your product is not listed, please refer to the GPSMAP or Legacy GPSMAP Software Update article in the related content:

  • echoMAP
  • echoMAP CHIRP
  • echoMAP Plus
  • echoMAP Ultra

NOTE: It is recommended that you backup all user data before performing the software update. For more information about backing up the user data of your device, please refer to the Related Content.

Garmin offers three options to update the internal operating software of your chartplotter/sounder. This software update will only update the internal operating software of your device. The software update will NOT update mapping data.

Acquiring the update

Downloading the Software Update on a Computer

The software update bundle can be downloaded and installed to a blank/formatted microSD/SD card. At this time, the software update is only compatible with computers running Windows-based operating systems. Before downloading the update, there are two required items:

  1. A microSD/SD card (minimum 4GB capacity and maximum 32GB capacity)
  2. An SD card reader

With the SD card inserted into the reader and connected to the computer:

  1. Visit Garmin's device software update page
  2. Click the blue Download button
  3. Save the file to the desktop of your computer
  4. Double-click the file that was saved in the previous step
  5. If the message "This publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" appears, choose the Run button
  6. A new window will appear called Marine Product Software Update
  7. Click Next
  8. Select the drive letter corresponding to the SD card reader
  9. Click Next
  10. The update will now be installed to the SD card
  11. Once the installation is complete, click Finish

Downloading the Software Update through the ActiveCaptain App

echoMAP Plus 60/70/90 series devices are compatible with wireless updates through the ActiveCaptain App. See related Article:  Updating a compatible marine device with the ActiveCaptain application

Installing the Update

  1. Power on the device
  2. Choose "I Agree" when the Warning screen appears
  3. Insert the SD update card into the device
  4. Choose Update Software

The update will begin, updating the connected device as well as any other compatible accessories or devices present on the NMEA 2000 or Garmin Marine Network.

IMPORTANT: Do not remove the software update card until the device fully reboots and "I Agree" has been selected on the Warning screen. Removing the software update card before the process has finished may corrupt the operating system and may cause the device to become inoperable.
