Setup & Usage
Is Earthmate Still Available as a Standalone App?
- No, Earthmate Outdoor and Earthmate Hunt Edition are no longer available as standalone apps for purchase. However, if it has been previously paid for, Earthmate Outdoor or Hunt Edition and the subscription was still be active, access to download Earthmate Outdoor and Hunt Edition maps will still be available. This is as long as the data is available. If using an inReach device, access to Earthmate Outdoor. Earthmate Hunt is discontinued.
How Do I Begin Using It?
- To begin using the Earthmate app, first download it from the app store on your mobile device (Downloading the Earthmate App for Apple or Android). After downloading the app, sign in with the inReach account login with the same login information used at the Garmin Explore™ website.
How Many Phones or Devices Can I Use the Earthmate App On?
- The Earthmate app only works effectively when used on one mobile device at a time and paired with one inReach device. The option to load and log into the Earthmate app on more than one mobile device when used at different times and paired with the same inReach device, but attempting to use the app for one account on two or more devices will lead to issues or complications.
How Many Waypoints, Routes, and Track Logs Can the Earthmate App Store and Display?
- There is no defined limit for the number of waypoints, routes, or track logs the Earthmate app can store or display as this number varies based on the model of the mobile device used, as well as the amounts of data loaded to the website and device.
If I Cancel the Plan for My inReach Device, Can I Still Access the Earthmate App?
- No, access to Earthmate is discontinued when the inReach service has been canceled. However, the ability to access the account via the Garmin Explore website to export data is available. Refer to Related for more information.
Why Is Earthmate Not Notifying Me When I Receive Messages on My inReach Device?
- To be informed of new messages, Earthmate must be open or running in the background to allow it to communicate with the inReach device.
NOTE: Mobile devices may close apps running in the background to conserve battery, or some third-party apps even perform a similar task. Refer to the mobile device manufacturer for assistance.
Why Do I Not Have an Option for Compass, or Why Does My Compass Option Disappear?
- The original inReach SE and inReach SE+ do not have a compass so when they are paired with the Earthmate app, there will not be a Compass menu option. If the Compass option is seen briefly after opening the Earthmate app and it later disappears, this just indicates that Earthmate has picked up on the connection to the inReach device.
Mapping and Downloads
I Just Updated to the New Earthmate App and All of My Maps Are Gone, How Do I Get Them Back?
- The new version of Earthmate has been updated with a new map engine and newer, more up-to-date maps. Any maps previously downloaded in the older version of the app are no longer compatible with Earthmate and had to be deleted. See Related for steps on downloading maps.
What Is Digital Atlas of the Earth? How Is It Different From Topo North America?
- Digital Atlas of the Earth is a topographic map dataset with data for land areas around the entire world. Topo North America is a more detailed topographic dataset with data for North America only. In regions where both Digital Atlas of the Earth and Topo North America are available, the Topo North America dataset will provide a more detailed map.
Am I Able to Choose Where to Store the Maps I Download in the Android Earthmate App?
- Yes, if using Android 4.4 or later, there is an option in the Settings of the Android Earthmate app for the ability to choose to store the maps on external or internal memory. This option is not available in previous versions of Android.
Collecting and Syncing Data
How Is Information I Collect in the App Sent to My inReach Account?
- Waypoints and track logs collected in the Earthmate app are automatically synced with the online Garmin Explore website account every 10 minutes as long as the mobile device has a data or Wi-Fi connection.
NOTE: The iOS Earthmate app can collect log information while running in the background on an iOS device, but due to Apple restrictions it cannot sync data unless it is the active app on the mobile device. To ensure that the information is synced, open the app on the iOS device and leave it on the screen as the active app.
What Information Gets Synced to or From the Website or inReach Device Using Earthmate?
What syncs with Earthmate depends on the inReach device. Refer to a model below. Keep in mind user data consists of waypoints, routes, and tracks.
- inReach Explorer, inReach SE and inReach 1.5 (black box):
User data can be synced using the Earthmate app. For new customers, the default setting will be to sync everything in the Library when pairing a new device. The Primary Collections can also be set in the Garmin Explore account to determine what user data is synced to the inReach device, and where user data synced from the inReach appears on the Garmin Explore website. - inReach Explorer+, inReach SE+, inReach Mini:
User data and account changes, such as plan changes or edits to Quick Text messages, can be synced using the Earthmate app. For new customers, the default setting will be to sync everything in the Library when pairing a new device. The Primary Collection can be set in the Garmin Explore account to determine what user data is synced to the inReach device, and where user data synced from the inReach appears on the Garmin Explore website.
NOTE: If the Earthmate app has been deleted or installed on a new mobile device, messages older than one year old may not sync to a newly installed Earthmate app.
What Happens If I Edit a Waypoint in the App at the Same Time I Edit the Same Waypoint on the Garmin Explore Website?
- If a waypoint is edited in both the Earthmate app and the Garmin Explore website at the same time, whichever changes were made last will be reflected in both locations the next time Earthmate syncs to the website
My Phone/Tablet and inReach Device Were Not Connected and the Data Created During That Time Is Not Shown. Why?
- When an inReach device becomes disconnected from Earthmate, the phone/tablet can still create data using the phone/tablet GPS. This data is contained in Unorganized (data that is not in a collection). To be able to see this data, the visibility for Unorganized needs to be enabled on the Map page of the Garmin Explore Website under Library. For more information, see - Getting Started With the Garmin Explore Website Map Page.
Track Points in History of Earthmate Do Not Reflect the Correct Amount Recorded by the inReach Device. Why?
- The History page in Earthmate will show all of the tracking points that were sent from the inReach device except in certain circumstances. The Earthmate app will need to be kept active and in the foreground for the track points to sync from the inReach device to Earthmate. The inReach device stores up to 20 track points to transfer to the Earthmate app. If the inReach device is power-cycled, it will not transfer track points to the Earthmate app. Gaps in the track recording may be due to a drop in connection between the inReach Device and the Earthmate app, and will fill in after the connection is re-established.
Can I Create a Collection to Organize My Data in the Earthmate App?
- It is not possible to create collections within the Earthmate app.
How Do I Remove Track Logs From the Map of the Earthmate App?
- While there is an option to toggle off the history or individual tracks, this does not truly hide them from the map view. The only way to remove the tracks from the map view is to delete them. Be advised that any data that has not been uploaded to the Garmin Explore website will be irrevocably lost. For more details, see - Deleting Tracks in the Garmin Earthmate App.
