Understanding the Always On Setting for an Approach S70 Watch

AMOLED displays have a setting called Always On which affects how the watch display behaves. That behavior can vary based on what screen the watch is showing, as well as if it is being worn or not. By default, the settings on the watch are optimized for battery life and performance.

Always On is set to "off" during General Use by default due its higher power consumption. General Use is defined as any time the watch is not recording an activity and it is not within the hours you have set as your sleep times. Always On can be adjusted separately for during activity recording and general watch use. If you enable Always On the watch will dim, but the display will still be visible while it is idle. With Always On disabled, the screen of the watch will go blank while idle. The conditions for the watch's behavior are outlined below.

Always On Behavior

Depending on what state your watch is in and which screen is showing, it will behave differently. The watch determines itself to be "off-wrist" when the optical heart rate sensor is enabled, but the watch is not able to detect a heart rate. By default, turning your wrist toward your body, tapping the touchscreen, or pressing a button will wake the display to full functionality and brightness when using Always On.

When Enabled and Showing the Watch Face

This is the behavior to expect when using Always On, and the watch is showing the watch face.

  • On-Wrist - The display will dim after your selected Timeout setting (4/8/15 seconds).
  • Off-Wrist - The display will dim after your selected Timeout setting (4/8/15 seconds). The display will then go blank after 5 additional seconds without interaction.

When Enabled and Not Showing the Watch Face

This is the behavior to expect when using Always On, and the watch is not showing the watch face, for example in the Menu or in a Glance.

  • On-Wrist - The display will dim after your selected Timeout setting (4/8/15 seconds).
  • Off-Wrist - The display will dim after your selected Timeout setting (4/8/15 seconds). The display will go blank after 2 minutes of no interaction with the watch.

When Disabled

This is the behavior to expect with Always On disabled, and the watch is showing the watch face. When not on the watch face, on-wrist or off-wrist the display will turn off after 2 minutes.

  • On-Wrist - The display will turn off after your selected Timeout setting (4/8/15 seconds).
  • Off-Wrist - The display will turn off after your selected Timeout setting (4/8/15 seconds).

NOTE: During your sleep times, the display will turn off. Touching the screen or pressing any button will allow you to see the time.
