"BaseCamp quit unexpectedly" Error on Mac
On rare occasions, Garmin BaseCamp™ software for Mac OS X can display a message that says BaseCamp quit unexpectedly. This can be caused by files leftover from an older version of BaseCamp software or by a corrupt GPX file on a connected GPS device.
To Resolve this Issue:
- Update BaseCamp software to the latest available version:
- Open BaseCamp program
- Click BaseCamp in the menu bar
- Click Check for Updates
- If a Kern Protection Failure message displays when a GPS device is connected, a corrupt GPX file on the device is the likely cause. See "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin device" Error in BaseCamp
- If there is no device connected when the error occurs,
- Delete the BaseCamp software preferences file:
- Open Finder
- Click Go in the menu bar at the top of the screen
- Press and hold the Option key
- Click Library1, then release Option
- Open the Preferences folder
- Move com.garmin.BaseCamp.plist to the Trash
- Empty the Trash2
- Open BaseCamp program
- Delete the BaseCamp software preferences file:
- Delete old BaseCamp crash reports (Mac OS X 10.6 - 10.9 only):
- Open Finder
- Click Go in the menu bar at the top of the screen
- Press and hold the Option key
- Click Library1, then release Option
- Open the Logs folder
- Open the CrashReporter, or Garmin folder
- Move all files with Garmin or BaseCamp in the name to the Trash
- Empty the Trash2
- Open BaseCamp program
- Delete old BaseCamp crash reports (Mac OS X 10.6 - 10.9 only):
BaseCamp software should now open without quitting unexpectedly.
1On Mac OS X 10.6, the Library folder is not hidden. Select Home from the Go menu, then open the Library folder.
2If the Trash cannot be emptied, restart the Mac and try again.
