Supported Yamaha Features on a Garmin® Chartplotter

Yamaha offers a number of products that provide compatible Garmin chartplotters or Garmin MFDs connected to a Yamaha system with varying levels of Yamaha functionality. The functionality provided is dependent on the type of connections made with the Yamaha system, as well as the type of Yamaha and Garmin equipment present in the installation.

For an overview of the various installation types (including Yamaha & Garmin part numbers) expand the desired drop down below for more information.

NOTE:
Yamaha Engine Data and Yamaha Data sources coming in to a Garmin MFD via J1939 are not bridged over and out via NMEA 2000 to other Garmin MFDs or Garmin Chartplotters.
Each Garmin MFD must be connected to the Yamaha Engine Bus Multi Hub.
The TD 50 touchscreen display does not support the Yamaha UI Engine page

The following 4 drop downs are sorted based upon which integration provides the most engine and vessel data as well as control over Yamaha-specific features and settings:

Full Yamaha® Support - J1939 Integration with MFD Interface

A full integration via a Yamaha MFD Interface (MFDI) black box that provides the following:

  • Engine data (Speed, Oil Pressure, etc.)

  • Yamaha-specific User Interface

  • Autopilot Controls (e.g. Heading Hold, Pattern Steer, etc.)

  • Engine and Peripherals Control (Steering Friction, Trim, etc.)

  • Technician Settings

  • Send Waypoint data over J1939 to a Garmin MFD

Yamaha MFDI to Multi HUB and GPSMAP

The Yamaha MFDI installation centers on the Yamaha Multi Hub, with a set of cables that link the Engine port of MFDI to the Multi Hub, while another set of cables links the Hub to the J1939 port of Garmin MFD.

  • For installations requiring engine data input via NMEA 2000, the use of a Yamaha 6YG adapter cable is required

    • IMPORTANT: If a Yamaha CL7 is on the vessel, this MFD also features NMEA 2000 and will serve as a NMEA 2000 Gateway to Garmin chartplotters, in which case a Yamaha 6YG Gateway is not to be used

WARNING: Do not use a 6YG & CL7 on the same network with a Garmin chartplotter (the system can only support one gateway)

NOTE: Not all Garmin chartplotters will have all the display options. Consult the Owner's Manual  see: Finding the Owner's Manual for a Garmin Device for more information on setting up and configuring the gauges.

Advanced Yamaha® Support with J1939 Integration

The Yamaha Engine Bus to J1939 Cable solution uses a Garmin manufactured cable (see table below for part numbers) fitted with a Yamaha pigtail connection that runs to a Yamaha Multi Hub engine bus. This installation provides the following:

  • Engine data (Speed, Oil Pressure, etc.)

  • Yamaha-specific User Interface

  • Send Waypoint data over J1939 to a Garmin MFD

For a more detailed list of data, refer to the final two drop down sections.

Yamaha J1939 Only Install

Using only a Yamaha Engine Bus to J1939 only is similar to the MFDI installation, but it does not include the MFDI and it only utilizes a single set of cables.

Base Yamaha® Support - NMEA 2000 Integration Only

The Yamaha 6YG Engine Bus to NMEA 2000 solution is ideal for chartplotters not equipped with J1939. This installation uses a Yamaha gateway to convert Yamaha information that would normally run to the J1939 port to NMEA 2000 which can then be provided to the Garmin system via NMEA 2000. This installation provides:

  • Engine data (Speed, Oil Pressure, etc.)

  • Yamaha-specific User Interface

NMEA 2000 Direct to Yamaha Engine(s)

While some Yamaha engines may be able to integrate directly via NMEA 2000 without the use of a gateway, the installation itself is not something Garmin Product Support can assist with.  It is possible that data displayed may be correct, provided the NMEA 2000 PGNs are supported by any networked chartplotters. For more information on supported NMEA 2000 PGNs, consult the Owner's Manual for the chartplotter.  For information on how to accomplish this sort of install, consult with a Yamaha dealer.
