My Approach Watch Will Not Power On or Charge

If your Approach® watch will not turn or charge, the troubleshooting steps listed below may be able to help.

Approach Watch Will Not Power On

In some instances, a watch may show a blank screen and will not power on. You can try the following reset to get the watch to respond.

  1. Hold the power button (see your owner's manual for location of the power button) for 30 seconds.

  2. Release the power button.

  3. Connect the watch to a computer.

  4. If the watch does not power on automatically with the computer connection, hold the power button again for 30 seconds.

At this point the watch should power on and indicate that it is charging.

Cleaning the Buttons

If the watch does not power on you can try cleaning the buttons on the watch to make sure they are working. See The Buttons on My Garmin Watch Do Not Respond When Pressed or Appear to Be Stuck for instructions on cleaning the buttons.

After cleaning, make sure the watch is dry and try the steps above in Approach Watch Will Not Power On again.

Cleaning The Charging Contacts

If the watch will still not power on, we also recommend cleaning the charging contacts on the back of the watch and the charging cable.

For steps on how to clean these, see Cleaning the Charging Contacts on a Garmin Watch.

Troubleshooting for Charging

If you have already tried the reset and cleaning steps above, here are a few more things that can be checked when attempting to charge the Approach.

  • Disconnect and reattach the charging cable.

  • Charge the watch through a different power source such as a computer.

  • Leave the watch plugged into the charger for up to two hours, remove from the charger, then charge for another two hours.

  • Try another charging cable.

When charging, you should see a lightning bolt in the battery icon. If your watch is draining power quickly make sure your software is up to date, see - Update Golf Courses and Device Software on an Approach Watch, and that there is not an activity recording accidentally in the background.
