Fitness Device Fails to Sync Successfully Using Garmin Express

If the Garmin Express™ program fails to sync with a fitness device that communicates through a USB data cable, follow these troubleshooting steps which should resolve most issues:

NOTE: For Garmin fitness devices that communicate with Garmin Express wirelessly using an ANT+ Stick, see Related content at the bottom of this article. 

  1. Check for and install updates for Garmin Express (See the following FAQ for help: Updating the Garmin Express Application Software

  2. If Garmin Express states that the device is not connected, follow the troubleshooting information in following FAQ that best fits your device:

  3. Ensure that the software is up to date by following this FAQ:  Installing the Latest Software On Your Fitness Device

  4. If there is no SYNC button available, check the Upload Preferences in Garmin Express to ensure that consent has been given to upload data to Garmin Connect:

    1. Select your device.

    2. Select Tools & Content.

    3. Select the Privacy tab.

    4. Select Change Upload Preferences.

  5. If Garmin Express displays a server error, see Related Content.

  6. If there are corrupt files on the device, Garmin Express may display the error Some files could not be uploaded to Garmin Connect. as shown below:

If this error occurs, manually upload all of the activities from the device to Garmin Connect and then delete the activity files from the device.
