Comparing Body Composition Data to Other Tests or Scales

Index scales use bioelectrical impedance to calculate body composition. The Index S2 uses updated body composition algorithms to determine your body composition metrics. You may notice differences in some data, including your body fat percentage, when comparing the Index S2 to the original Index scale or other tests.

To get the most accurate view of your overall body composition, Garmin recommends the following:

  • Verify the surface of the scale is clean and dry before use.

    • To clean the scale use water or a mild detergent. Dry the scale using a clean, lint-free, towel.

  • Do not wear socks or shoes.

  • Stand still with your feet placed flat on the glass surface of the scale. Do not contact the screen or the Garmin logo.

  • Do not bounce or move while the scale is measuring.

  • Use the device under the same circumstances and at approximately the same time of day each time you use the device.

  • Wait two hours before using the device after eating, drinking, exercising, bathing, or visiting a sauna.

  • Ensure user profile settings are correct.

Following these recommendations will provide you with the most accurate view of your body composition over time.

My Body Fat Reading is Lower Than Expected

If the body fat reading on the scale is much lower than what you expect or lower than what it previously reported, the scale is likely in Athlete Mode.  Refer to Body Fat Percentage Is Too Low on the Index Smart Scale Series for instructions to disable this setting.

My Body Fat Reading is Higher Than Expected

As previously mentioned, it is possible for your body fat ready to be higher when comparing the Index S2 to the original Index Smart Scale or other tests.  Ensure you have followed the recommended best practices above for the most accurate results.

If you have completed a body composition test using a gold standard method, and that test has been completed within the last three months, you can enter your body composition information into your Garmin Connect account and the Index scale will use that information as reference points when calculating your data during a weigh in.
