There are multiple ways to update the software on your GDL 5X
Aviation Portable Device: These devices can have the software for the GDL® 5X data transceiver embedded in its own software update. Ensure that your portable device is on the latest software version, then connect to the GDL 5X for the transfer start. Portable devices that can update the GDL 5X include: the aera® 660 and 760 portable GPS
An iOS or Android mobile device: The software will be received through the Garmin Pilot™ aviation application. This is a free download and requires a Bluetooth connection between the GDL 5X and the mobile device. Once the GDL 5X is connected via Bluetooth, open Garmin Pilot:
- Navigate to the Main Menu.
- Touch the Devices icon.
- Look for the GDL 5X listing and tap on the listing.
- Next to the word "Firmware", if there is a software update available, an option will be made available to start the software update.
