Memory Card Recommended to Update GPSMAP 64x Series Handheld

GPSMAP® 64csx, 64sx, and 64x outdoor handhelds come with free updates for their preloaded TopoActive mapping. Since the GPSMAP 64x series handhelds were first released in 2019, so much new information has been added to these maps that they will not all fit on the handheld's internal memory. Updating the maps is not required in order to use the handheld, but if you choose to update the maps Garmin Express™ software will prompt you to Use a Memory Card (Recommended) or Choose a Region:

For more details on microSD card requirements, see - Memory Card Size Requirements for Garmin Outdoor Handhelds.

Updating Maps With a microSD Card (Recommended)

Installing a microSD Card

IMPORTANT: Do not use a preloaded/preprogrammed map card while updating the TopoActive maps, even if the card has available space on it. Installing a map update onto a preloaded/preprogrammed card may corrupt or overwrite the original map files on the card.

You can watch the following video for instructions or follow the steps in the owner's manual.

Updating Maps by Choosing a Region

The TopoActive map is updated periodically throughout the year, usually in the spring and fall. For coverage of the TopoActive map, see Related .

The Choose a Region option will only be presented if there is enough internal storage on the handheld to install a smaller region, and some regions may still be unavailable to update without the use of a microSD card. For example, the latest United States region of TopoActive North America cannot be installed without using a microSD card.

  1. Open Garmin Express program.

  2. Connect your handheld to the computer using a USB cable.

  3. Follow the prompts to Add a Device or select your handheld by clicking on it.

  4. Select Install or Install All when prompted.

  5. Select Accept after reviewing the Terms and Conditions.

  6. Select Continue after reviewing the Important Notes.

  7. When prompted, select Continue next to Choose a Region.
