Garmin eLog ELD Definitions of Terms and Acronyms
Refer to the common terms below for more information about the Garmin eLog™ app and regulations.
Adapter – Refers to the Garmin eLog™ Compliant ELD device plugged into the vehicle data port.
AOBRD – Automatic On-Board Recording Device (has fewer data recorded than the ELD).
ELD – Electronic Logging Device.
All trucks newer than the model year 2000 are required to have electronic logging solutions as of December 2015. The use of AOBRD units was available through December 2017. Since December 2017 AOBRD units are no longer legal and ELD devices are required for interstate trucking on all trucks model year 2000 or newer.
NOTE: The Garmin system is NOT an AOBRD, it is a full ELD device certified by the FMCSA as such.
Adverse Conditions – Problematic driving conditions such as snow, sleet, fog, ice, etc. This can be used to add no more than an additional 2 hours to the 11 hour drive time when the above conditions are present. This cannot exceed the 14 hours of available on-duty time for the day.
Certify Logs - Certifying logs are required before submitting them to the FMCSA or DOT. See the owner's manual for more info.
CMV ID, CMV Power Unit Number, Carrier USDOT ID – The Carrier Multiple Vehicle number is something assigned by the motor carrier. An independent owner/operator may not have a CMV ID on their vehicle. See Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) ID Number in the Garmin eLog App for more information.
Co-driver - The Garmin eLog App supports co-drivers. See Garmin eLog Support for Multiple Drivers for more info.

DOT – Department Of Transportation
Duty Status – This term refers to the Duty Status options used by driver's and motor carriers to meet supported FMCSA regulations.

Off Duty Status – The truck is not in use by the driver and is stationary.
On Duty Status – Time the driver can perform job related duties when the vehicle is not in motion. This will count towards the maximum on-duty status time for the day but not against the available driving hours.
On Duty-Driving Status – Tine the driver is operating the vehicle for job related duties. This will count against the driver's available daily drive time.
Personal Conveyance Status – Personal use of the truck. Interrupts the sleeper berth status if used. The administrator setting up the driver profile can enable or disable the use of this status. It can be enabled by editing the driver profile while logged into the administrator profile if it does not appear in the list of available statuses.
Sleeper Berth Status – Time the driver spends resting in the sleeper-berth compartment. This duty status is used on its own or in combination with the Off Duty Status option to meet FMCSA Sleeper Berth Provision requirements.
Yard Moves Status – Used for moving the vehicle a short distance within the same lot/yard. Interrupts the sleeper berth status if used. The administrator setting up the driver profile can enable or disable the use of this status. It can be enabled by editing the driver profile while logged into the administrator profile if it does not appear in the list of available statuses. DVIR – DVIR stands for Daily Vehicle Inspection Report and will show trailer numbers, shipment numbers, CMV Power Unit Numbers, and issues with the vehicle and trailer. See Creating and Saving a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) in the Garmin eLog App.
eLog – Electronic Log.
eLog Model Number or ELD Identifier – The identification number for the brand of eLog device found in the settings menu. See Garmin eLog Model Number or ELD Identifier.
Exemption – See Garmin eLog Exempt Driver Profile
- A note identifying the exemption type is required when an exemption is selected.
FMCSA – Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Home Time Zone – The time zone where the driver’s home base is located. This is used to correctly record the logged hours when traveling between time zones.
HOS – Hours Of Service.
HOS Violation – This occurs when a driver exceeds the regulated driving time for the day.

Logs – refers to the driving information recorded.
Profiles:
Admin Profile – The administrator profile which can be used by a company to access their driver's logs and information. In the case of an owner/operator, the driver and administrator profile will frequently be the same person. Both profiles are required to be created for the eLog to function correctly.
Driver Profile – The primary profile the driver will use to interact with the logs and create reports.
NOTE: The administrator and driver profiles cannot have the exact same name. A number or middle initial can be added to differentiate.
RODS report – The Record Of Duty Status report shows the driving history of the driver's compliance with federal regulations. See Drivers: How do I Submit Duty of Status Records to my Motor Carrier from a Garmin eLog ELD? (Exporting a RODS Report).
Unidentified Driver Records – Logs recorded while off duty such as test drives by a mechanic or yard moves with the driver absent. An orange triangle icon represents an unidentified driver.
Vehicle Diagnostic Port or Vehicle Data Port – The data access port on the vehicle supported in a 9-pin, 6-pin, or 16-pin configurations by the Garmin ELD. See Truck Types Supported by the Garmin eLog for more information.

Weekly Rule Set – There are different rules for how many hours can be driven in a certain time frame. See Regulations and Exemptions Supported by the Garmin eLog for profiles supported by the Garmin eLog.
24-Hour Starting Period – The time within a 24-hour day that the day begins. The 24-Hour Starting Period should be set before you expect to begin your day. This should be set by your motor carrier. You can set it to 00:00:00 (Midnight) if you don't have a normal schedule.
