Signs of a Garmin Chartplotter Overheating

Every Garmin chartplotter is rated to work in a specific temperature range. The installation manual will list this information under the specifications of the device.

Mount the device in a location to avoid overheating. If mounting in an area where temperatures exceed operating ranges, additional ventilation may be required, such as flush-mounted. Consider adding a fan to circulate air and help cool the space. Another source of excess heat is the reflection from the window.

Some signs that the machine may be overheating are:

  • The chartplotter is hot to the touch

  • The device locks up and must have power removed to reset

  • The screen turns white or discolors

  • The device responds slowly when pressing buttons
