Garmin Express Prompts me to Select a Region I Don't Want During a Map Update

Choose a Region 

Garmin Express™ software will automatically offer to install a smaller mapping coverage region to these devices when there is not enough internal storage to install full coverage. To view the states, provinces, and/or areas in each region, see North America Map Regions.

NOTE: Garmin Express software will not allow the installation of another region if the only region available to install is Canada and Border States. This is the smallest region. If this is your only option, the other regions won't fit on the device's internal memory. The other regions must be installed to a microSD/SD card by following the steps below.

Follow These Instructions to Install the Remaining Maps to a microSD/SD Card if Full Map Coverage/Other Regions are Desired on your Device:

NOTE: For best results, insert the SD card into the device before proceeding and verify the microSD/SD card is being recognized by the device and computer. Also, ensure the microSD/SD card is the correct size by visiting the FAQ SD Memory Card Sizes for Automotive Devices or SD Card Sizes for Garmin OEM Devices.

Windows

Step A: Install the Map to your Computer

If an Updated Region has not yet Been Installed to the Device:

1. Open Garmin Express program

2. Select the device to update

3. Click View Details

4. Click Installation Options

5. Select Computer and Device

6. Click Install or Install All

  • Select Computer Only if an insufficient memory message displays.

7. Accept the license agreement

8. Click Continue

9. Select a region to install to the device, then click Continue.

Note: Full maps will still be installed to the computer.

If an updated region has been installed to the device:

1. Open Garmin Express program

2. Select the device to update

3. Click Map Details

  • Skip this step if your device does not have a map update subscription.

4. Click Map Options

5. Click Install to Computer

Note: Full maps will be installed to the computer.

6. Click Continue

Step B: Install the Remaining Maps to your Memory Card Using MapInstall™ Software

1. Insert a microSD/SD card into your Garmin device

2. Connect the Garmin device to your computer

3. Open MapInstall

  • MapInstall software was automatically installed during the Garmin Express software download and will be located under your Applications on your computer.

4. Select the microSD/SD card (memory card) in the Device drop-down box

5. Click Continue

6. Ensure the correct map is selected in the drop-down box at the bottom of the window

7. Select the map region(s) you would like to install to the memory card

  • Click a map segment to select it.

  • Click and drag a box around an area to highlight and select multiple states/provinces.

  • Use the right mouse button to deselect segments.

8. Click Continue

Mac

Step A: Install the Map to your Computer

If an Updated Region has not yet been Installed to the Device:


1. Open Garmin Express program

2. Select the device to update

4. Click Installation Options

5. Select Computer and Device

6. Click Install or Install All

  • Select Computer Only if an insufficient memory message displays.

7. Accept the license agreement

8. Click Continue

9. Select a region to install to the device, then click Continue

Note: Full maps will be installed on the computer.

If an updated region is already installed to the device:

1. Open Garmin Express program

2. Select the device to update

Note: Full maps will be installed to the computer.

5. Accept the license agreement

6. Click Continue

Step B: Install the Remaining Maps to your Memory Card Using MapInstall™ Software

1. Insert a microSD/SD card into your Garmin device

2. Connect the Garmin device to your computer

3. Open MapInstall

NOTE: The installation of BaseCamp™ software is required before you are able to open MapInstall.  

4. Click the dropdown to see the microSD/SD card in the device drop-down box

5. Select the microSD/SD card

6. Click Continue

7. Ensure the correct map is selected in the drop-down box

Note: You may need to select Advanced/Partial Install to access this screen.

8. Select the map region(s) that you would like to install to the memory card

  • Click a map segment to select it.

  • Click and drag a box around an area to highlight and select multiple states/provinces.

  • Hold down the Command key while clicking to deselect segments.

  • Choose Clear Selections from the Edit menu to deselect all segments.

9. Click Send Maps

10. Click Confirm

11. Click Done

After MapInstall has finished loading the maps, disconnect the device, and the maps will be available for use.
