Blinking depth reading after range adjustment

Garmin Sounders and FishFinders have a setting called Range. The Range setting is used to adjust the range of the depth scale on the edge of the screen. The range setting can be set to Auto or Manual Range.

Auto Range is designed to allow the FishFinder or Sounder to adjust the depth scale automatically with the changing depth of the water. The Range will always be changed to display a deeper range than what the actual depth is.

Manual Range is designed to allow the user to adjust the depth scale manually. This will help the customer see what is being read below the boat to a certain depth.

If the Range is manually set to a depth that is shallower than the actual depth of the water, the FishFinder or Sounder will not be able to accurately read the water depth and the digital number for the depth will begin to blink. An example of this would be if a device's range is manually set to 10 feet, but the actual water depth is 20 feet.

One reason the devices work this way is to allow better fishing performance in the ocean. If a fisherman is looking for fish in 100 feet of water, but the depth is several hundred feet, the sonar ping rate would be significantly reduced if we force the device to wait for the bottom return before it could transmit again.
