Automotive Device Doesn't Have Any Sound

There are a few settings that can be checked if your automotive device does not have any sound. The first thing to check is that the volume or master volume is set to an audible level.

To Check the Volume or Master Volume:

  1. Touch the Volume icon on the Where To? View Map screen
  2. Confirm that the volume is set to the desired level and it is not muted

The volume level should now be set to the desired level. If the device is still not providing spoken instructions at this point, you will need to change the voice to ensure that the preset voice is not faulty.

To Change the Voice Language:

  1. Touch Tools
  2. Touch Settings
  3. Touch Language
  4. Touch Voice Language
  5. Touch the desired language
  6. Touch Ok

The device will now speak the selected language.

If changing the voice language resolves the issue, the language files may need to be updated on your device. For steps to do so, see  Missing or Corrupt Voice Files on an Automotive Device.

If the device is now playing audio but not audible navigation, the device may be in pedestrian mode.  The pedestrian mode will not have audible directions.

To Change the Vehicle Type:

  1. Touch Tools
  2. Touch Settings
  3. Touch System
  4. Touch the box adjacent to or underneath Usage Mode
  5. Touch the desired vehicle type
  6. Touch OK to save the change

The vehicle type/usage mode can be changed by following the listed steps or by touching the vehicle type icon at the top of the main menu.

If changing the voice is not helping you will need to ensure that you are running the latest software which can be done with Garmin Express. See Updating Automotive Maps and Software with Garmin Express for steps on updating the software on your Garmin device.
