Troubleshooting NEO 3M Connectivity

Connection Versus Control

The Tacx® NEO 3M smart trainer is capable of both being connected to and controlled by a variety of devices. Understanding the differences can help with troubleshooting connection.

Connection

The trainer is able to be connected to multiple devices in order to share its data such as power, speed, distance, etc. When a connection is established to a device such as an Edge® cycling computer or training app, the trainer is simply transmitting the data and the connected device has no dictation on the resistance or road feel of the trainer.

Connection Types:

  • Bluetooth Low Emission: Up to 2 connections allowed

  • Wi-Fi/Ethernet: One connection allowed

  • ANT+: Multiple connections allowed

Control

When the trainer is controlled, it is not only sending information back to the paired device, but the device can change the trainer's resistance, change the road feel, or setting the rider's simulated weight.

Protocols used for Control:

  • FTMS (Fitness Machine Service Protocol)

    • Preferred method for Tacx trainer road feel and weight

    • Available via BLE and Ethernet/Wi-Fi

  • FE-C
    • Standard for ANT+ control

Solid Status LED

The primary function of the status LED on the NEO 3M is to indicate what kind of connection is controlling the trainer.

White LED
The trainer is on, but not being controlled.

Blue LED
A BLE connection has control of the trainer.

Green LED
An ANT+ device has control of the trainer. A green LED will also indicate that an ANT+ device was the last to control a trainer if the control has ended. This is because the trainer is still using the settings last set by the ANT+ device instead of defaulting back to 0% slope.

Yellow LED
An ethernet or Wi-Fi connection has control of the trainer.

Troubleshooting Control

BLE Control

BLE Connections gain control by sending "request" message to the trainer over FTMS (Fitness Machine Service Protocol). Only one control is granted at a time. Here are some tips to help a failed BLE Control pairing:
  • When pairing via BLE for the first time to a device, the trainer must be plugged in to the power cable.

  • Force close all background apps, including the training app. Relaunch the training app after a few seconds.

  • Remove the trainer in the device's bluetooth list. Allow the training app to initially discover the trainer.

  • Release control with 2 second button press.

    • Press and hold the button for 2 seconds until the status LED blinks white. The trainer will release control from the current controlling connection and deny it control for 15 seconds to allow a new app to gain control.

Tacx App Control

Specifically for the Tacx Training™ App, the trainer must be put into pairing mode by pressing the button. This is not required on 3rd party training apps.

ANT+ Control

ANT+ control uses FE-C (Fitness Equipment Control) protocol and is what Garmin devices use to control a trainer. The trainer will show a green light not only if it is currently being controlled by ANT+, but also if ANT+ was the last means of control. This is important to note if free-riding with the trainer, because the trainer will use the last settings made by ANT+ control.  To troubleshoot ANT+ control:
  • Long press the button on the trainer to break any current controllable connections

  • On any compatible devices, go to the menu > sensors > select the trainer > remove

  • After removing the trainer, re-add it as new in the sensors menu.

    • Some devices use the training menu to add a controllable trainer. Refer to your owner's manual to see if your device has this option.

Ethernet/Wi-Fi Control

Ethernet/Wi-Fi Control requires an additional accessory: the Tacx® Smart Network Adapter. Refer to this FAQ to set up the Network Adapter. To troubleshoot Ethernet/Wi-Fi control:
    • Ensure the training app is using the same Wi-Fi network the trainer is using.

    • Ensure the trainer is connected to power while using the Network Adapter.

    • Control over Wi-Fi/ethernet will not work behind VPN or certain firewalls such as workplace or hospitality environments.

    • In the training app, the NEO 3M will show up as two connection options , one for BLE version and one for the Network version. Ensure you are selecting the network version.
