Using an International Model of VHF Radio (i.e. VHF 100i, 200i, 215i, 300i or 315i) in the U.S

Garmin offers both a US and an International version of each of our radios. Since the US version and the international version operate in different band frequencies, the international versions will not be able to receive some channels when being used in the US and the US will not be able to receive certain channels when being operated in international waters.

If an international radio needs to operate in the US and receive all of the appropriate channels, the radio will need to have the US band frequencies enabled by an authorized dealer. Not all dealers have this ability.

Enabling US VHF Bands

These bands can only be enabled by a certified service center. View the list of dealers at here. When searching with the Find a Dealer tool, be sure to choose Marine Service Center under the Product Category drop down menu.

This will list all of the Marine Service Centers within the area. Not all Service Centers have the ability to change the frequency band, so it may be best to call ahead of time to find out if they offer that service.

Changing the VHF from International to US frequency bands

Once the other band frequencies have been enabled, follow these instructions to allow the radio to use the new bands.

  1. With the radio turned ON, press the Menu button

  2. Select Channel

  3. Select Frequency Band

  4. Select either USA, International, or Canada depending on what has been enabled
