Unable to Import GPX Files Into Garmin Explore App for iOS

There is a potential issue with the latest versions of iOS that can cause GPX files to not be accessible to the Garmin Explore™ app when attempting to import. When trying to import a GPX file, the files app of the iOS device will not let you select the GPX file to complete the import.

There may be other apps installed on the iOS device that adjust the way the mobile device interacts with GPX files which negatively affects the import functions of the Garmin Explore app. Until an update to resolve this issue is released by Apple, there are a couple of things that can be done to get around this.

Remove Other GPS or Mapping Related Apps

  • Remove any GPS or mapping related apps from the mobile device that could be affecting the GPX file import.
  • Since there are many different apps that could be related to this, we cannot say specifically which ones could be causing it. In our investigation, we found the issue is not caused by Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Google Earth.

Alternate Method to Import GPX Files

Instead of importing GPX files using the import option within the Garmin Explore app, the GPX files can be shared to the Garmin Explore app.

  1. Open the Files app of the iOS device.
  2. Find and touch the GPX file.
  3. Touch the share icon in the lower left of the screen.
  4. Touch the Garmin Explore app to share the file.
NOTE: If the Garmin Explore app is not showing in the list of apps after touching the share icon, touch More and the Garmin Explore app should show in the list.

The GPX file will then be imported into the Garmin Explore app in its own, newly created Collection.
