Number of characters that can be used to name a waypoint, route, or track on a GPSMAP 4xx and 5xx series device

The GPSMAP 4xx and 5xx series devices (both Legacy and 2013 versions) are limited on the amount of characters that can be used to name a waypoint, route, or track. Below is a list of how many characters can be used to name each of these:

  • Waypoint - 10 characters
  • Route - 13 characters
  • Saved Track - 13 characters

Any letter or number can be used when naming an item. Spaces and other special characters can also be used to name a waypoint.

If more information about the item is needed, past the maximum amount of characters it can be named, the Comments section of the item can be used to provide additional information.

If a waypoint, route, or track is created in MapSource or HomePort and sent to the device, the device will automatically capitalize all of the letters that are used in the name.

If a waypoint, route, or track is on the device and another waypoint with the exact same name is copied to the device, it will add a number 1 after it and will sequentially keep increasing that number if more waypoints with the same name are added.

If a waypoint, route, or track is using the maximum amount of characters for the name and another waypoint with the same name is copied over, the last two letters of the new waypoint's name are removed and replaced with a space and number. The number will sequentially increase with the amount of items are added with the same name.
