Borrowing or Lending Out an inReach Handheld

NOTE: This FAQ does not apply to inReach® Professional accounts or devices that work with the Garmin Explore™ app or Garmin Messenger™ app. Professional inReach accounts allow administrators to create multiple users and assign devices to those users. The Garmin Explore app includes a Guest Device feature for lending out a compatible inReach device. For more details, see - Garmin Explore App Guest Device. For more details on the inReach Messenger, see Lending an inReach Messenger Device

When borrowing or lending out an inReach handheld that has been activated with an inReach Personal subscription, we recommend being aware of the following:

  • When an inReach subscription is activated for an inReach handheld, all charges associated with the subscription are tied to the inReach account subscriber.

  • Do not change the email address on the account or other owner information. This can cause issues when trying to return the account information to the original owner. Instead, the Emergency Notes section of the account can be updated to include details for the person borrowing the inReach device (name, dates they are using it, their emergency contacts, etc.). For more details, see - Adding or Updating Emergency Notes on an inReach Account.

  • The inReach account subscriber can uncheck "Include My Name As A Signature" under the SMS Message Configuration settings in their account. If this is left checked, every message sent will have the account holder's name attached. For more details, see - Editing inReach SMS Message Coordinates, Map, and Signature Settings.

  • Any additional Search And Rescue (SAR) benefit coverage applies to the account owner and does not cover the borrower. If the borrower wishes to have SAR coverage it is available for purchase in the US, Canada, and US Territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands) or they will need to use their own benefit coverage. For more details and purchase options, visit - SAR Insurance.

  • When connected to Iridium satellites, all user data and messages will sync to the inReach subscription owner's account. The same is true if the borrower pairs and uses the inReach handheld with the Earthmate app on their mobile device.

  • If you have questions about using an SOS in specific scenarios, or have follow-up questions after having triggered an SOS for any reason, contact the Garmin Response℠ Center.

Using the Earthmate® App When Borrowing or Lending Out an inReach Handheld

The Earthmate app should only be used on one mobile device at a time and you must sign in with the email that was used when activating the inReach subscription (i.e. the inReach device owner's email). Attempting to use the app with one account on multiple devices at the same time can lead to issues or complications. Also, logging into the app and syncing with the Garmin Explore website requires a data connection, which may not be available when out in the field.

To pair with the Earthmate app, see - Pairing Instructions for Earthmate Compatible inReach Devices.

Items that sync over Iridium satellites and when paired to the Earthmate app:

  • Waypoints
