Garmin Legacy Product Is Not Detected by Garmin Applications

USB communication issues can prevent Garmin applications from communicating with Garmin devices. Check the following to determine if your device is properly connected to the computer:

  • Try a different USB port on the computer.

  • Turn the device off and then back on again.

  • Plug the USB cable directly into the device and the other end directly into a USB port on the computer. Do not use a hub or docking station.

  • Ensure the USB cable is a sync cable.  Some USB cables are charging cables only, and do not transmit data. The cable that came with the device is a sync cable and will show GARMIN on the USB plug.

  • Home computers on home networks are preferred. Business computers and networks may not allow the use of Garmin applications.

  • Try another USB cable or another computer.

Older Garmin products are not compatible with all Garmin programs. Open the chart below to determine which Garmin programs your legacy Garmin product is compatible with.

NOTE: MapSource® software can be used for legacy outdoor handhelds that are not compatible with BaseCamp™ software. If you encounter a "Previous MapSource Not Found" error while installing the MapSource program this can be resolved by installing the BaseCamp program first, then running the MapSource program install again. Installing BaseCamp software will load the necessary background files required for the MapSource program to install and run on the computer.
