Getting Started With the Garmin Explore Website Map Page

The Map page of the Garmin Explore™ website is used to view tracking and location information of compatible devices, as well as creating and managing data like waypoints, tracks, etc.

NOTE: Date and time stamps will be displayed using the time zone your computer or mobile device is set to, which may differ from date and time provided by the handheld device.

NOTE: For items mentioning to toggle visibility (i.e. eye/eyeball icons), this means clicking on the icon will change it from enabled to disabled, or vice versa.


One Page Bar - Used to Navigate Between Different Pages

NOTE: If you are not a current inReach® satellite communicator subscriber, some options may not be present.

  • Home: Provides a summary of subscription, bill, and statistics

  • Map: Used to manage user data, view data and messages

  • Plan & Devices: View device information, manage primary collections, and change subscription information

  • Inbox: View and manage messages and message threads

  • Contacts: Add and edit contacts

  • Messages: Create, edit, and manage Check-in Messages ( formerly known as Preset Messages) and Quick Text Messages

  • MapShare: Manage and configure MapShare™ trip sharing page. If you have enabled LiveTrack™ location sharing, this will be labeled as LiveTrack instead. For more details on LiveTrack, see - LiveTrack for inReach.</em></p>

  • Account: Manage user and billing information. Can also send a test message to a device and adjust measurement units


Two Map Filters - Used to Alter Your View of Data

  • Bookmarks: Allows for saving a particular map view of data from a specific date range

  • Message Types: Able to hide or show different message types on the map

    • Locate: Location requests

    • Messages: Messages sent from the inReach communicator

    • Track Points: Track points sent from the inReach communicator

    • Navigation: Navigation to a waypoint

    • Reference Points: Reference point locations sent from an inReach SE®+ or inReach Explorer®+ satellite communicator

    • MapShare: MapShare™ link messages sent from the inReach communicator

  • Date & Time Range: Able to set the time-frame for which tracks can be viewed. Select from preset options or specify a custom date range. This does not affect the visibility of routes, courses, activities, or waypoints

  • Clear Filters: Removes all bookmarks, message types, and date/time filters on the map data

Three User - For Managing User Visibility and Additional Interaction Options

  • Visibility Enabled - Eyeball or Gray Visibility Eye Slash Icon: Toggle visibility of tracks, messages, and the user's location on the map

  • Message Icon BubbleMessaging Options

    NOTE: Device has to be powered on with a clear view of the sky for these features to work

    • Track Start Icon: Remotely activate tracking on this user's inReach device

    • Locate Star Icon: Request the location of this user

    • Second Message Bubble Icon: Send a message to the selected user

      • If the user replies, that reply will be to the Account email address only

      • Using the MapShare™ link allows friends and family to choose where replies go, that way you can continue the conversation

    • Send Location Icon: Send a location to the selected user


Four Messages - Shows Messages Sent by the User

  • Arrow Icon: Displays all messages when selected

    • Gray Visibility Eye Icon or Gray Visibility Eye Slash Icon: Toggles map visibility of all messages

    • Black Eyeball Icon or Black Eyeball Slash Icon: Toggles map visibility of individual messages


Five Library - Used to Manage All Data, Also to Sync and Enable MapShare™ Trip Sharing Page Items

  • Gray Visibility Eye Icon or Gray Visibility Eye Slash Icon: Toggles map visibility of all waypoints, tracks, routes, and activities

  • Arrow Icon: Select to expand to a list of waypoints, tracks, routes, activities, and unorganized data

    • M icon for MapShare Visibility: Toggles MapShare™ for Library or selected Collections

    • Sync Visibility Arrow Circle Icon: Used to sync collection to the device

    • Gray Visibility Eye Icon or Gray Visibility Eye SlashIcon: Toggles map visibility of data in the selected tab

    • Waypoint Flag Icon: Waypoint tab shows all waypoints in the account

    • Track Footprint Icon: Track tab shows all tracks in the account

    • Route Push Pin Icon: Route tab shows all routes in the account

    • Activities Person Icon: Activities tab shows all activities in the account

    • Folder Icon for Unorganized Data: Unorganized tab shows all data that has not been added to a collection


Six Collections - Lists of Data That Can be Viewed Separate From the Library, Allowing for De-Cluttering the Map or Quickly Finding Items

The Following Options Are Shown Before Selecting a Collection

  • Gray Visibility Eye Icon or Gray Visibility Eye Slash Icon: Toggles map visibility of all collections

  • Sort A Z Down Arrow Icon: Change Sort By option

  • Add Collection Plus Icon: Select to create a new collection

  • Waypoint Flag Icon: Displays how many waypoints are in a collection

  • Route Push Pin Icon: Displays how many routes are in a collection

  • Track Footprint Icon: Displays how many tracks are in a collection

  • Activities Person Icon: Displays how many activities are in a collection

The Following Options Are Shown After Selecting a Collection

  • Gray Visibility Eye Icon or Gray Visibility Eye Slash Icon: Toggles map visibility of a collection

  • M Icon for MapShare Visibility: Toggles MapShare™ for Library or selected Collections

  • Sync Visibility Arrow Circle Icon: Used to sync collection to your device

  • Edit Pencil Icon: Allows collection name, and items in the collection to be edited

  • Trash Can Icon: Deletes the collection

  • Waypoint Flag Icon: Waypoint tab shows all waypoints in the collection

  • Route Push Pin Icon: Route tab shows all routes in the collection

  • Track Footprints Icon: Track tab shows all tracks in the collection

  • Activities Person Icon: Activities tab shows all activities in the collection

Seven Map - Used for Trip Planning, Managing Data, and Viewing Messages on a Map

NOTES:
To change the coordinate system or measurement units for the Map page, select the Account page Units.
The Overlander® GPS navigator is not compatible with courses. If courses are created from the Explore app or website and added to a collection, the Overlander® navigator will fail to sync any data until the course is deleted from the Explore account.

  • Plus Icon: Zoom in on the center of the map

  • Minus Icon: Zoom out from the center of the map

  • Single Dot Within a Circle: Centers the map over the most recent track created by the device to MapShare™, the most recently imported track to the account, or the most recent message sent that included location.

  • Overlay Stacked Layers Icon: Change between map layers

    • Available mapping layers: Topo, OpenStreetMap, Aerial, and Road

  • Waypoint Flag Icon With Plus: Select to place a waypoint on the map

  • Push Pin Route Icon With Plus: Select to start creating a new route

  • Ruler Measuring Icon: Select to measure the distance between two or more points

  • Down Arrow Import Option: Imports GPX, KML, KMZ files 

  • Up Arrow Export Option: Export data as a KML or GPX file

  • Search Bar: Search for a city, address, trail, POI, etc

  • Waypoint Details: A word bubble with options appears on the map when a waypoint, track, or other data has been selected

    • Trash Can: Deletes the item from the library and collections

    • Book Icon: Change which collections to include the item in

    • Pencil Icon: Edit the item

  • Track Line With Dots: Tracks created in the field and sent via an inReach device, which will not sync to other devices by default.

  • Track Line With Triangles: Tracks that can be synced to other devices. For more details, see - Track Syncing on the Garmin Explore Website.
