Correcting "Antenna Shorted to Ground" error message
If an external antenna like the GA 29 or GA 30 is being used and this message appears, there is a problem with either the connector or the cable for the antenna. Follow these suggestions to try to correct this issue by installing a new connector.
- Try cutting off the BNC connector from the antenna cable.
- Cut approximately 6 to 12 inches off the now exposed cabling.
- Crimp or solder a new BNC connector onto the exposed end. (BNC connectors can be purchased at most electronic or marine stores. The size of the antenna wire is RG 58.)
- Connect the antenna with the new connection, and power on the Garmin.
If the message still appears after installing the new BNC connector, the antenna will need to be replaced. The current antenna available is the GA 38. The GA 38 has a detachable cable that is available for purchase here.
