Connecting a GPS 17x/19x HVS Antenna Directly to a VHF 100/200/300 to Provide GPS Information

Position information can be supplied to a VHF 100, 200, or 300 series by connecting a GPS 17x or 19x to the radio using either NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000. This would allow the VHF radio to have GPS position information without the use of a chartplotter.

To connect the GPS 17x or 19x NMEA 0183 antenna, follow the instructions below for the proper VHF radio:

  • VHF 100 or VHF 200

    • Connect the Red wire from both the VHF and antenna to the boat's positive power source

    • Connect the Black wire from both the VHF and antenna to the boat's common ground

    • Connect the Orange wire from the antenna to the common ground

      • Note: When connecting the Orange wire to the common ground, the antenna will constantly draw power. Installing a switch on the Orange or Black wire would be recommended so the antenna can be shut off when not in use

      • When using the GPS 19x NMEA 0183 ensure the orange resistor wire is inline with the connection

    • Connect the Purple wire from the VHF to the Gray wire from the antenna

    • Connect the Gray wire from the VHF to the White/Red wire from the antenna

  • VHF 300/300 AIS

    • Connect the Red wire from both the VHF and antenna to the boat's positive power source

    • Connect the Black wire from both the VHF and antenna to the boat's common ground

    • Connect the Orange wire from the antenna to the common ground

      • Note: When connecting the Orange wire to the common ground, the antenna will constantly draw power. Installing a switch on the Orange or Black wire would be recommended so the antenna can be shut off when not in use

      • When using the GPS 19x NMEA 0183 ensure the orange resistor wire is inline with the connection

    • Connect the White wire from the VHF to the Gray wire from the antenna

    • Connect the Orange/White wire from the VHF to the White/Red wire from the antenna

When the VHF radio is powered on, and the antenna is switched on, the VHF radio will receive position information from the antenna once the antenna has acquired satellites. For more information and wiring diagrams, review the Owner's Manual for that specific device.
