Connecting a TR-1 Gold to a Chartplotter over NMEA 0183

The TR-1 Gold autopilot can receive GPS navigation data from a NMEA 0183 compatible GPS device. When attempting to complete the wiring, it's important to note that NMEA 0183 is split into two serial data communications standards. The two types are RS-232 and RS-422. If unsure as to which standard the GPS device utilizes, consult with the manufacturer.

To wire the TR-1 Gold to a GPS device that uses an RS-422 connection:

If wiring a TR-1 Gold to a GPS device that uses an RS-232 connection, an NMEA expander is needed in order to boost the voltage to the levels required by the TR-1 Gold. Garmin recommends using a NoLand SX14 (replaces the NoLand XP15) NMEA 0183 Expander for this type of installation. While Garmin does not sell this accessory, it can be acquired from NoLand Engineering as well as numerous online retailers.
