Australia and New Zealand inReach Consumer Enabled Plan vs. Suspended Plan
Garmin has simplified the inReach® Consumer Service Plans and we have eliminated the Freedom Safety, Freedom Recreation, and Freedom Expedition plans. Our new consumer plans are all month-to-month and only require a 30-day commitment:
Enabled is a new plan that includes unlimited SOS, but pay-as-you-go pricing for other features.
Essential has replaced Freedom Safety.
Standard has replaced Freedom Recreation.
Premium has replaced Freedom Expedition.
Can I Still Suspend My Service?
As of June 5th, 2025, all consumer inReach subscription plans have the option of suspending service for up to 12 months with no re-activation fee, except for inReach Annual Contract subscription plans. Suspending is not available for new activations and will only be available when making changes to an existing plan.
Reasons for Suspending
If the device is only needed during certain times of the year, suspending the plan is a great option. Suspending puts the device in a "stopped" state to avoid recurring monthly charges when it is not in use. Devices can be reactivated easily and generally without incurring additional fees if done within 12 months of suspending the service.
When choosing to suspend a plan, there are some important things to consider:
SOS, messaging, location requests, inReach weather, and inReach tracking will not function during the suspended period.
All data is maintained during the suspended period. This includes waypoints, routes, tracks, MapShare™ page, messages, and more.
There are no fees for suspending a plan, and a plan can be suspended for up to 12 months.
Plans that are left suspended for 12 months will be automatically cancelled at the end of the 12th month. If you wait to re-activate until after the inReach subscription plan has been cancelled, you will be assessed another activation fee.
A suspension is not an immediate action and will take place on the plan's upcoming monthly renewal date.
For details on how to suspend an inReach subscription, see - Suspending an inReach Subscription Service Plan.
Reasons for Switching to an Enabled Plan
The Enabled plan includes unlimited SOS and messaging with the Garmin Response™ team, but pay-as-you-go pricing for other features. This provides a way of keeping the inReach device active and ready for use in an emergency situation at a low monthly cost. If you start to change your subscription, an Enabled state of operation will be presented along with pricing information based on your region.
When choosing to switch to an Enabled a plan, there are some important things to consider:
There is no activation fee if you choose to change back to a higher plan later.
Additional charges apply to sending, receiving, and reacting to messages (outside of using SOS).
Additional charges apply to sending tracking points.
Additional charges apply to weather forecasts.
For details on how to change your inReach subscription, see - Changing an inReach Subscription Plan.

What Happens if I Cancel My Service?
Cancelling takes effect immediately and puts the inReach device in a "deactivated" state where it no longer functions on the Iridium satellite network. Any saved account data will still be available after cancelling. If there is no activity on your Garmin account across all our sites and services for at least 2 years, your account may be deleted. For more details, see - Inactive Account Deletion.
Devices have to be activated again in order to function on the Iridium satellite network and would incur another activation fee of $70.00 AUD/$80.00 NZD. For pricing information in other regions, see - inReach Satellite Subscription Plan Pricing and Global Availability FAQ.
How Can I Change From a Suspended Plan to an Enabled Plan?
If your inReach subscription is currently suspended, you must reactivate if you wish to change it to the Enabled plan (or any other available plan). For instructions, see - Reactivating a Suspended inReach Device.
1 Message reactions are done by pressing and holding on a message in the Garmin Messenger™ app and selecting an emoji. Composed messages that include one or more emojis within the text of the message will still be impacted by per-message character limits as described in Character Limits of Messages in the Garmin Messenger App.
2 The inReach Messenger Plus satellite communicator is currently the only device that has the ability to send and receive photo and voice messages over the Iridium satellite network. For more details, see - Sending a Photo or Voice Message With the Garmin Messenger App.
