Settings That Improve the Distance and Speed Accuracy of Enduro 3 Watches

There are many factors that contribute to incorrect speed and distance on an outdoor watch. Some are outside of your control, such as GPS drift and environmental factors. However, there are several changes you can make to the settings of your watch that can improve the data captured during an activity.

Recording Methods

Many of Garmin's outdoor watches offer the ability to change the recording method, with a choice between Smart Recording and Every Second. This setting refers to the interval at which GPS data is recorded during an activity. Smart Recording is the default setting due to the balance it achieves in detail and battery consumption, but enabling Every Second recording can improve speed and distance accuracy.

Smart Recording vs. Every Second

Smart Recording

  • Smart Recording saves GPS points when changes in direction, speed, heart rate or elevation are detected. Smart Recording is the default setting of Garmin's watches for the balance it achieves in detail and battery consumption.

Every Second Recording

  • Every Second recording will record a GPS point once per a second, regardless of direction, speed, heart rate or elevation. Every Second recording will produce highly detailed tracks of your activities. A more detailed track will lead to more accurate speed and distance data.

Example of Smart Recording vs. Every Second Recording

  • The upper track represents Smart Recording while the lower track represents Every Second recording. You can see that Every Second recording creates a more smooth track line, and picks up small changes that Smart Recording does not.

Changing Recording Methods

  1. Press and hold UP/MENU (middle left) button.

  2. Select Gray gear icon Watch Settings.

  3. Select System.

  4. Select Advanced.

  5. Select Data Recording.

  6. Select Frequency.

  7. Select Every Second or Smart.

3D Speed and 3D Distance

The 3D Speed and 3D Distance features change the way outdoor watches read speed and distance by taking into account elevation changes when calculating distance and speed.

  • 3D Speed – Calculates speed using both the elevation change and horizontal movement over ground.
  • 3D Distance – Calculates the distance traveled using both elevation change and horizontal movement over ground.

Enabling 3D Speed and 3D Distance improves speed and distance accuracy when doing activities with moderate to high elevation changes.

Enabling 3D Speed and 3D Distance

  1. Press and hold UP/MENU (middle left) button.

  2. Select Gray gear icon Watch Settings.

  3. Select Activities.

  4. Select a specific activity type, such as Run.

  5. Select (Activity Name) Settings.

  6. Toggle on 3D Speed and/or 3D Distance.

Once these features are enabled, the watch will calculate speed and distance using 3D Speed and 3D Distance.

Multi-Band GPS

Enduro™ 3 watches feature "Multi-Band" or Dual-frequency GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) capability, which can help to improve speed and distance accuracy when environmental factors like tall buildings or trees are difficult to avoid. For more information about Multi-Band GPS, refer to What is Dual Frequency/Multi-Band GPS?.

Enabling Multi-Band GPS

  1. Press START (upper right) button to view the activity list.

  2. Select an outdoor activity profile.

  3. Press DOWN (lower left) to access options and select Activity Options.

  4. Select Satellites.

  5. Select All + Multi-Band.

This will adjust the default setting for that activity profile. To adjust the general settings for activities on the watch, you will want to adjust the satellite settings within your Activity Focus Mode settings.

Distance or Pace Source

If you are using an HRM-Pro™ or HRM-Pro™ Plus heart rate monitor paired to your watch, check the source of your distance or pace data. If you are running outside, consider having the HRM as the distance and pace source for only indoor activities, so that the watch is relying on GPS tracking for your outdoor data. Since terrain can impact stride length, using GPS tracking outside can help with accuracy. If you want to learn more about using the HRM-Pro or HRM-Pro Plus to track pace and distance see - Using the HRM-Pro/Pro Plus Running Pace and Distance Feature.

Checking HRM-Pro or HRM-Pro Plus Monitor Pace or Distance Settings

  1. Put on the heart rate monitor.

  2. Press and hold the MENU/UP (middle left) button of the watch.

  3. Scroll to or select Settings.

  4. Select Connectivity (some watches skip this step).

  5. Select Sensors & Accessories.

  6. Select HRM-Pro or HRM-Pro Plus.

  7. Select HRM Pace & Distance.

  8. Select Use for Pace or Use for Distance.

  9. Select when you want the HRM to be the source for that data. Unless your activities are in areas of severely degraded GPS signal, we recommend using the Indoor setting.
