Compliance with French Law Regarding Red Light and Speed Camera Alerts
French Highway Code Article 413-15, in effect since January 5, 2012, prohibits the use or possession of speed camera detectors in a vehicle.
At that time the Cyclops Red Light and Speed Camera database was changed so that speed camera locations in France are not identified, instead showing the areas as Dangerous Zones.
If your Garmin GPS navigator included red light and speed camera data, this change was included with a device software and Cyclops Red Light and Speed Camera database update.
If you are Unsure if Your Device has Been Updated:
If you have a Cyclops Red Light and Speed Camera subscription or free trial that covers France installed on your Garmin device, you can ensure compliance with French law by following the steps below:
- Update your Garmin device's operating software using Garmin Express™ software
- Download the updated Cyclops database, which now covers Dangerous Zones in France, rather than specific safety camera locations
You will need to download and install any updates that mention translation files and proximity alerts when updating through Garmin Express.
The following subscriptions available for purchase in Garmin Express will include coverage of Dangerous Zones within France and will be compliant with French law, provided that the above updates have already been installed on the compatible device being used:
- Cyclops Dangerous Zones – France
- Cyclops Safety Cameras – Europe
Some older devices will refer to individual Dangerous Zones as being “Mobile Safety Camera Zones” after updating the device and downloading the new Cyclops database. This is still in compliance with French law since specific safety camera locations are not displayed in France and will instead be replaced with Dangerous Zone data.
