"Cannot Authenticate Maps" Error Message on an Outdoor Handheld

If a Garmin handheld displays the message Cannot Authenticate Maps, or Contact the map content seller for help, it has detected a map that cannot be validated for use with that device.

This usually indicates an issue with the data, or incorrect/missing unlock information, in the map files. This can occur during an initial map installation or update, or by inserting a preprogrammed Garmin map card.

Possible Scenarios That Cause This Error

Refer to your situation below and perform the troubleshooting listed to resolve the issue.


Updated a Preloaded Map That Came in the Device

  • Ensure that Garmin Express is up to date.
  • Download the map through Garmin Express again:
    1. Plug in your device to the computer and open Garmin Express.
    2. Select your device.
    3. Select Map Details (in blue above Software Version).
    4. Select Map Options for the appropriate map.
    5. Select Reinstall Map.
  • Safely eject the device after reinstalling the map:
    • Windows: Press Windows key + E, right-click the device or card, then choose Eject (if the device is not listed, it does not need to be ejected).
    • Mac: Drag the device to the trash, or select Finder and choose the eject symbol next to the device or card (sometimes labeled as No Name).
      • Even though the installation appears to complete, the write-caching feature on some computers may have not have completely built or transferred the map to the device.

The device should now power on without displaying the error. If you continue to receive the error, contact Garmin Product Support for further assistance.


Downloaded a Purchased Garmin Map

  • Ensure that Garmin Express is up to date.
  • Download the map through Garmin Express again. Steps can be found under Related.
  • Safely eject the device after reinstalling the map:
    • Windows: Press Windows key + E, right-click the device or card, then choose Eject (if the device is not listed, it does not need to be ejected).
    • Mac: Drag the device to the trash, or select Finder and choose the Eject symbol next to the device or card (sometimes labeled as No Name).
      • Even though the installation appears to complete, the write-caching feature on some computers may have not have completely built or transferred the map to the device.

The device should now power on without displaying the error. 


Inserted a Preprogrammed Garmin Map Card

  • Exchange the card with the retailer it was purchased from.
  • When reaching out to support, be sure to provide the name of the map you purchased.

Inserted a Preprogrammed Third-party Map Card

  • We do not test third-party mapping and therefore cannot guarantee or assist in its functionality with our devices.
  • Work with the dealer or company that supplied the card to determine if they claim the map is compatible with your specific Garmin model.
  • Work with the dealer or company that supplied the card for any exchange or refund requests related to the card, if needed.
