Garmin® Marine Device Shows Software Version 0.00

A Garmin® marine device may list its software version as 0.0 if it fails to complete a software update. A forced update may resolve this issue by making the marine device reinstall the software update.

NOTE: Forced updates may not be performed on the following devices:

   • GNX™ 120
   • GNX™ 130
   • GPSMAP® 478
   • GPSMAP® 60
   • GPSMAP® 76C
   • STRIKER™ series
   • VHF series

If one of the above devices shows a software version of 0.0, contact Product Support.


The software update bundle can be downloaded and installed to a blank or formatted micro/SD card. The following items are required to download the update:

    • A Windows or Mac computer

      • Windows system requirements: Windows XP Service Pack 2 or newer

      • Mac system requirements: OS X version 10.3 "Panther" or newer

    • A micro/SD card (minimum 16 GB, maximum 32 GB capacity)

      • It is recommended to use a blank card or to back up any files on the card

    • A micro/SD card reader, if the computer does not have a built-in reader

Forced software updates cannot be completed using ActiveCaptain. The software update files must be downloaded to the micro/SD card through Garmin Express or directly from the Garmin website.


Downloading the software update

Select the computer's operating system below for instructions:

Windows

Insert the micro/SD card into the computer or connected card reader, then select a download method below for instructions:

Garmin Express™

  1. Insert the micro/SD card into the computer or attached card reader

  2. Launch Garmin Express

  3. Select and sign in to a Vessel account

    • If no Vessel account has been created, select Add a Device > Sign In and follow the onscreen prompts to create an account

  4. Select Software Updates

  5. Read the Important Notes, then select Continue

  6. Read the Terms and Conditions, then select Accept

  7. Select the SD card drive

  8. Select Continue

  9. Select OK

  10. Select Continue again

  11. Allow the software update to finish downloading

  12. Safely remove the micro/SD card from the computer

NOTE: The software update file must be downloaded to the computer and opened. Downloading the file directly to the micro/SD card will not update the device software.

  1. Select the proper software bundle based on the Garmin device to be updated:

  2. Select I agree to the above terms and wish to proceed to the download page.

  3. Select Download

  4. When prompted, save the file to the Desktop

  5. Double-click the downloaded file

    • If the message "This publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" appears, select Run or Yes

  6. After extracting, a new window called Marine Product Software Update will appear. Select Next

  7. Select I accept the terms of the License Agreement.

  8. Select Next

  9. Select the micro/SD card drive

    • If the drive does not appear in the drop-down list, select Find Drive

  10. Select Next

  11. Select Finish when the installation is complete 


 After downloading the software update, safely remove the micro/SD card:

    1. On the keyboard, hold down the Windows key + E

    2. Select This PC on the left side

    3. Right-click the SD card drive

    4. Select Eject

The micro/SD card with the software update files can now be removed from the computer or card reader.

macOS

Insert the micro/SD card into the computer or connected card reader, then select a download method below for instructions:

Garmin Express

  1. Insert the micro/SD card into the computer or attached card reader

  2. Launch Garmin Express

  3. If the message "Garmin Express" would like to access files on a removable volume appears, select Yes

  4. Select and sign in to a Vessel account

    • If no Vessel account has been created, select Add a Device > Sign In and follow the onscreen prompts to create an account

  5. Select Software Updates

  6. Read the Important Notes, then select Continue

  7. Read the Terms and Conditions, then select Accept

  8. Select the SD card drive

  9. Select Continue

  10. Select OK

  11. Select Continue again

  12. Allow the software update to finish downloading

NOTE: The software update file must be downloaded to the computer and opened. Downloading the file directly to the micro/SD card will not update the device software.

  1. Insert the micro/SD card into the computer or connected card reader

  2. Choose the proper software bundle based on the Garmin device to be updated:

  3. Click I agree to the above terms and wish to proceed to the download page.

  4. Click Go to the Mac download page

  5. Click Download

  6. Locate the completed download and open it

  7. When the downloaded file has been opened, drag and drop its contents onto the micro/SD card drive 

  8. Place both items into the Garmin folder, if present


After downloading the software update, safely remove the micro/SD card:

    1. Select the grey and blue macOS Finder icon Finder icon on the Dock that shows open applications

    2. Right-click external hard drive on the left side of the window

      • The micro/SD card drive may be labeled GARMIN or NO NAME

    3. Select Eject

The micro/SD card can now be removed from the computer or card reader.
