If the device's screen has frozen,
reset the device
by following the instructions below.
Note: Temperature can affect your device's ability to power on or charge properly. See the Environment section after expanding the Why is This Happening dropdown below for more info.
This Video is a Quick and Easy way to Learn About Charging Your Device:
Verify the Device is Getting Power:
1. Plug your device into the vehicle with its original Garmin vehicle power cable, pictured below with a green checkmark
Make sure there is nothing between your vehicle power cable and your vehicle's power outlet, such as a splitter or other charging accessory.
Do not use a USB cable, pictured with a red symbol below.
2. Turn the vehicle's power on 3. Check the light on the vehicle end of the power cable and make sure it is lit
If the cable does not light up, try a different vehicle
The fuse is not user replaceable for the Garmin DriveSmart™ 65 with Amazon Alexa power cable.
4. Drive normally with the device connected to power for at least 10 minutes
The device should power on after taking these steps.
Remove Any Memory Cards in the Device:
NOTE: Try using a different memory card with a Garmin Dash Cam.
Format the memory card if this resolves your issue
For instructions go to the Support Center and enter the product name or the serial number of your device
Once your device is selected click Other and search for "Formatting a microSD/SD Memory Card"
Reset the Device
If the device still does not power on, or if the screen has become frozen and will not power off, a soft reset can help by forcing the device to reboot.
To Perform a Soft Reset:
Connect the device to a power source with its car charger cable
An A/C adapter may also be used, but if the problem persists, the car charger cable will need to be used
Press and hold the power button or hold the power switch in the "on" position, and slowly count to 30
The device should now turn on. Leave the device connected to power to give the battery time to charge.
Go to the Support Center and enter the product name or serial number of your device
Once your device is selected, click Other and search for "Charging an Automotive Device"
Devices With Powered Mounts:
If the device has a powered mount plug it into a computer using the USB port located directly on the body of the device rather than the mount. See Where to Connect the USB Computer Cable on Devices With a Powered Mount . If the device powers on this could indicate a problem with the mount and it may need to be replaced.
Why is This Happening?
An issue where your Garmin device will not turn on, is frozen, has a dead battery, or has a black screen can have several different causes:
Dead Battery:
A device will not turn on if it has an empty or "dead" battery
This can be resolved by charging the battery, but this is not always as simple as connecting the device to any cable or power source
Go to the Support Center and enter the product name or serial number of your device
Once your device is selected, click Other and search for "Charging an Automotive Device"
Environment:
The environment in which the device is used can affect its ability to properly receive power
If the device "freezes" on a single screen and will not respond to your touch, the device may have run into a software "bug", "glitch", or other similar types of problems
Since all electronic devices do a large number of tasks and calculations every second, it is always possible for the device to get stuck at one point or another while in use
This problem may be solved with a software update
Go to the Support Center and enter the product name or the serial number of your device. Once your device is selected click Other and search for “Updating Automotive Maps and Software with Garmin Express"
