"This device is not compatible with Express" Error Message when Adding Honda Navigation Device to Garmin Express

When updating a Honda vehicle, you may encounter the error message "This device is not compatible with Express" when adding the device to the Garmin Express™ application.

Or, there may be an issue with your internet connection or your computer's settings if Garmin Express displays one of the following errors:

  • "We are unable to add this device because our servers are unavailable at this time."

  • "Sorry, we're having a problem communicating with our servers."

Follow the Troubleshooting Steps Below to Resolve:

  1. Ensure That Garmin Express is Up to Date

  2. Verify a Formatted 16 GB USB Flash Drive is Being Used

  3. Map Update Steps Must be Done within 24 Hours

    • This refers to steps from exporting the vehicle info to a USB Flash Drive to installing the map update using Garmin Express

    • The update process will need to be restarted from the beginning if they are not completed within 24 hours.

    • For the full Honda map update instructions see: Honda Navigation Map Update

  4. Ensure the Internet Connection Meets the System Requirements for Garmin Express

  5. Reset the Network Hardware

    • Shut down the computer and reset the network hardware by unplugging the router and/or modem.

    • After a minute, plug the router and/or modem back in to restart it and turn the computer back on and try using Garmin Express again.

  6. Check the Date and Time Settings on the Computer

  7. Temporarily Disable Internet Security/Firewall

    • Although most security software will not interfere with Garmin Express, some security software (such as software that is used on work computers or in a business environment) may cause this error.

    • If possible, try temporarily disabling the software.

      • If you cannot disable it, it will be necessary to use a different computer.

    • If disabling fails to resolve the issue, you can set up an exception for Garmin Express.

    • See Garmin Fleet Updater and Garmin Express Network Requirements for more information.

  8. Check the Proxy Settings on the Computer

  9. Disable Virtual Private Network (VPN)

    • If applicable, disable any VPN that is in use. If this is not possible, use a different computer and/or network connection.

  10. Uninstall Garmin Express

  11. Restart the Computer

    • NOTE: Shutting down, pressing the power button, or closing the lid on a notebook computer may not effectively restart the computer on some operating systems.  Follow the instructions below to ensure that the computer is completely restarted.
