Installing a NMEA 0183 GPS Antenna (HVS) to a Garmin® Chartplotter

To determine the wiring for a chartplotter and antenna combination, select the group the chartplotter belongs to.

Port settings

Adjust the communications ports listed below to match the GPS antenna installed on the vessel. See the owner's manual for device-specific steps; .

echoMAP™ series:

Select the appropriate Serial Port

    • GPS 17, 17N, 17x - Select NMEA Standard

    • GPS 19x / GPS 24xd - Select NMEA High Speed

GPSMAP™ series:

Select the appropriate input port

    • GPS 17, 17N, 17x - Select NMEA Standard

    • GPS 19x / GPS 24xd - Select NMEA High Speed

Select the appropriate output port

    • GPS 17, 17N, 17x - Select NMEA Standard

    • GPS 19x / GPS 24xd - Select NMEA High Speed


Checking if the antenna is transmitting: 

  • GPS 17 / 17N HVS White is the output wire

  • GPS 17X / 19X HVS / GPS 24xd "Gray" is the output wire

Place the positive lead of the Volt meter on the output wire and put the negative lead to ground. If there is a pulse in the reading the antenna is transmitting. If there is no pulse and it is a steady reading it is not transmitting and will need to be replaced.
