Requesting a Copy of Your inReach Message History

There may be times when you want to view your previous inReach® message history, but it is no longer available to view. Reasons for this could include having manually deleted messages from the account Inbox, removing the device from the account, or cancelling the plan for the device. However, you can request a copy of your inReach message history through your Garmin account with the steps below.

NOTE: Keep in mind that this request will also provide data from your Garmin orders, other Garmin applications, etc. To protect the privacy of other individuals, inbound/received messages will not be included in the data export.

Requesting Message History for Sent Messages

  1. Go to Garmin.com.

  2. Click Account Profile Icon in the top right.

  3. Select Sign In.

It should advise that your request was successfully submitted, and you will receive an email with your data. Typically data files are prepared and sent within 48 hours, but please allow up to 30 days.

Message History Data Fields

  • GPS Time: The time in UTC at which the GPS fix was recorded by the device. This is the actual timestamp from the GPS satellite data and reflects when the message or location was recorded.

  • Server Time: The time when Garmin’s server received and logged the message. May differ from GPSTime due to satellite transmission delay or queuing.

  • Lat: Latitude. The geographic latitude where the message was sent, in decimal degrees.

  • Lon: Longitude. The geographic latitude where the message was sent, in decimal degrees.

  • Altitude Meters: The altitude at the GPS location in meters above sea level, derived from the GPS elevation data.

  • Course Degrees: The direction of travel in degrees (0-360) based on true north.

  • Ground Velocity KPH: The ground speed of the device at the time the message was recorded, in kilometers per hour. Can help indicate is the item was sent while the device was stationary or moving.

  • Message Text: The content of the message sent or received.

  • Recipients: The intended recipient(s) of the message (email, phone number, inReach address, or device contact).

  • Archived: Indicates whether the message has been archived in the account. When a message is deleted by a user through an app or Explore website, the message is archived.

  • Service Type: Type of item being sent or received. Examples include TextMessaging, Tracking, MailCheck, WeatherRequest, etc.

  • Event Log Type: Describes the type of event that was logged. There are many types of events logged, but some common examples include TrackIntervalReceived, TrackingTurnedOnFromDevice, TrackingTurnedOffFromDevice, etc.

  • Direction: Indicates whether the message was incoming or outgoing. For example, DeviceToPortal means the message was sent from the inReach device to our portal. For a Location Request initiated from the Explore website map, the Direction would be PortalToDevice.

NOTE: When looking at a Message History file, some of the fields may not be populated if the message does not include that information. For example, MailChecks do not include GroundVelocityKPH, MessageText, or Recipients.
