Using the Older Update Method for GNS Database Updates

Updating the GNS™ avionics data cards using the Older Update Method:

Note: Using this method of database updates can only be done on a Windows computer.

  1. On fly.garmin.com, navigate to the GNS unit you wish to update.
  2. Below the button "LAUNCH GARMIN AVIATION DATABASE MANAGER," click on the link PC only update method.
    • PC only Update
  3. Ignore everything on this page except for the bottom right-hand corner, where you will see the databases.
  4. Choose the database corresponding to the card plugged into the computer, or go down the list of databases and change the cards appropriately.
  5. After selecting a database to download, you will be taken to a page with 3 bullet points. On the first bullet point, click the download link for your database.
  6. While downloading, notice the third bullet point, as well as the serial number and unlock code. These items will become important later on in the process.
  7. After the installer has finished downloading, double-click on the file to start the program.
  8. The program will launch, and the Older Update Method install wizard will be shown.
  9. Click the Next button, and you will be taken through a series of pages to verify that the card is correct, and to get the card's serial number.
  10. While clicking through, you will be prompted to verify the GNS data card. This will occur for both the IFRW and TAWS Datacards.
  11. Copy the serial number by clicking Copy button shown below.
  12. Paste the serial number that was copied in step 11 into the webpage under the 3rd bullet point into the box labeled "Serial:"
  13. Click on the button Get Unlock Code. Copy the unlock code generated by the program, then find the installer.
  14. The installer will look like the icon shown below and will be displayed on the taskbar. Most taskbars are located on the bottom of the computer screen.
  15. Once the Web Updater program is open again, click on the Next button until a page that asks for the unlock code is displayed.
  16. Copy the code into the box from Step 13, and then click on the Next button.
  17. A Finish button will be displayed.  Click the Finish button, and allow the download to complete.
  18. Wait for the progress bar to fill and display 100% complete.
  19.  Finally, eject the card and take it to the aircraft.

NOTE: If one of the following happens during the update process:

  1. A Runtime Error on the Older Update Method is displayed.
  2. The installer loops back to the "Finish" option.
  3. The installer crashes.

It is a strong indicator of a bad card.  Contact your local Garmin Dealer to get a new GNS card.
