CERTIFICATION APPROVAL: GDL 69 Series Software Version 4.02 is an FAA approved design under TSOA, as a minor software change. GDL 69 Series Software Version 4.02 also has airworthiness approval when installed in accordance with STC SA01487SE-D.
Note: Older GDL 69/69A units were supplied as PMA units. The newest are supplied as TSO units. The 4.02 SW is approved for either of these product versions.
COMPLIANCE
Recommended. Based on improvements to weather product processing, it is recommended that the software be upgraded. However, the decision to modify is at the owner’s discretion and is not warranty reimbursable.
PURPOSE
This Service Bulletin announces the availability of Software Version 4.02 for the GDL 69 series Satellite Datalink receivers.
Note: “GDL 69 Series” includes both the GDL 69 and GDL 69A.
GDL 69 Series Software Version 4.02 contains the following changes from 4.01:
- Improved processing of TAFs
- Improved handling of Winds Aloft, Freezing Level, Turbulence and Icing products
- Improved decoding of AIREP latitudes and longitudes
- Updated routing of HSDB data to the host system when GTS 825 or GTS 855 traffic systems are connected directly to the GDL 69 HSDB
- Improved decoding of cloud layer information in PIREPs
- Improved handling of Cyclone data
PRODUCTS AFFECTED
GDL 69 (Garmin P/N 011-00986-00) Units and GDL 69A (Garmin P/N 011-00987-00) Units with software versions 4.00 or earlier.
Note: GDL 69 Series Software Version 4.02 is not available for GDL 69/69A Units interfaced with non-WAAS 400/500 Units. (This software upgrade does not correct any issues for these units.)

This software service bulletin explains the process of upgrading the GDL 69/69A software to Version 4.02 in GDL 69/69A Satellite Data Link Receivers that are installed with the G600/G500, MX20, GMX 200, GNS 400W/500W, and GTN 6xx/7xx Units.
