Sending and Navigating to a Message Location with an inReach

Sometimes it may be helpful or necessary to send your current location from your inReach® device to a phone number, email address, or another inReach handheld. Steps for this can be found below.

Sending a Message with Current Location from an inReach Handheld

Alpha® 200i Dog Tracking Handheld

  1. From the main menu, touch iR Icon.
  2. Touch Messages.
  3. Touch New Message.
  4. Touch Send Location.
  5. Touch the desired contacts or type in recipients.
  6. Touch Done when finished.
  7. Touch Send Message.

GPSMAP® 66i, 67i, 86i, or 86sci Outdoor Handheld

  1. Press Menu twice to access the main menu.
  2. Select Messages.
  3. Select New Message.
  4. Select Send Location.
  5. Select the desired contacts or type in recipients.
  6. Select Done when finished.
  7. Select Send Message.

inReach Mini

  1. From the home page, press Down until you reach Location.
  2. Press OK.
  3. Select Share Location.
    NOTE: You may need to wait until the Mini acquires a GPS signal.
  4. Select Select Contacts.
  5. Select the desired contacts.
  6. Select Done.
  7. Select Send.

inReach Mini 2 Handheld

  1. From the home page, press Up or Down to scroll through the widget glances.
  2. Select Navigation.
  3. Press Down until you reach your GPS coordinates.
  4. Press OK to open the options menu.
  5. Select Share With.
  6. Choose recipients from your contact list or select Type Contact to enter each recipient's contact information.
  7. Select Next.
  8. Select an option:
    • To start with a pre-written message, press Up Button or Down Button to scroll through the quick text messages.
      NOTE: You can add and edit quick text messages on the Garmin Explore website.
    • To write a custom text message, select Type Message.
      NOTE: To select from the autocomplete options, begin typing a word, hold OK, and use Up Button and Down Button to scroll through the options.
  9. When you have finished your message, select Checkmark.
  10. Press OK to send the message.

inReach SE®+ or inReach Explorer®+ Handheld

  1. From the main menu, select Messages.
  2. Select New Message.
  3. Select the desired contacts or type in recipients.
  4. Select the Location option next to the Message field.

    NOTE: The Message field should now be filled in with your current location.
  5. Select Send Message.

Montana® 700i, 710i, 750i, or 760i Outdoor Handheld

  1. Touch House Menu Icon to access the main menu.
  2. Touch iR Icon.
  3. Touch Messages.
  4. Touch New Message.
  5. Touch Send Location.
  6. Touch the To: field to select the desired contacts or type in recipients.
  7. Touch Montana 7xx Back Arrow Icon when finished.
  8. Touch Send Message.

NOTE: The position format for latitude and longitude coordinates sent in SMS and Check-In Messages (formerly known as Preset Messages) enabled to include location is set to Decimal Degrees (WGS84) by default and cannot be changed.

Navigating to a Message with Location

Your inReach handheld has the option to navigate to a message with location that has been sent from or received by the inReach handheld. Steps for this can be found below.

NOTE: The inReach handheld will only have the option to navigate to a message that includes location. Some examples would be a message sent from your inReach handheld, a message received from another inReach handheld, or a message received from MapShare™ feature that includes location.

Alpha 200i Dog Tracking Handheld

  1. From the main menu, touch iR Icon.
  2. Touch Messages.
  3. Touch the desired conversation thread.
  4. Touch the desired message that includes location.
    NOTE: A message that includes location will be indicated with GPSMAP Message Includes Location next to the message.
  5. Touch the map tab.

  6. Touch Go.

GPSMAP 66i, 67i, 86i, or 86sci Outdoor Handheld

  1. Press Menu twice to access the main menu.
  2. Select Messages.
  3. Select the desired conversation thread.
  4. Select the desired message that includes location.
    NOTE: A message that includes location will be indicated with GPSMAP Message Includes Location next to the message.
  5. Use the arrow buttons to select the Map tab.

  6. Select Go.

inReach Mini Handheld

  1. From the home page, press Down to reach Messages.
  2. Press OK.
  3. Select the desired conversation thread.
  4. Select the desired message that includes location.
  5. Press OK.
  6. Select Navigate.

inReach Mini 2 Handheld

  1. From the home page, press Up or Down to scroll through the widget glances.
  2. Select Messages.
  3. Select the desired conversation thread.
  4. Select the desired message that includes location.
  5. Press OK to open the options menu.
  6. Select Navigate.
  7. Select Yes or No when prompted for Start Tracking?

inReach SE+ or inReach Explorer+ Handheld

  1. From the main menu, select Messages.
  2. Select the desired conversation thread.
  3. Select the desired message that includes location.
    NOTE: A message that includes location will be indicated with inReach Message Includes Location Icon next to the message.
  4. Select Navigate.

Montana 700i, 710i, 750i, or 760i Outdoor Handheld

  1. Touch House Menu Icon to access the main menu.
  2. Touch iR Icon.
  3. Touch Messages.
  4. Touch the desired conversation thread.
  5. Touch the desired message that includes location.
    NOTE: A message that includes location will be indicated with Montana 700i Message Includes Location next to the message.
  6. Touch the map tab.
