Garmin Mode Device Not Detected by BaseCamp

Connection issues between a Garmin mode device and the computer can prevent communication with Garmin BaseCamp™ software. Use the following tips and suggestions if BaseCamp software is not recognizing your device.

Check Legacy Device Compatibility with BaseCamp Program

Some outdoor legacy devices, like the GPSMAP® 60, are compatible with Garmin BaseCamp software. Older models that use serial data connections, however, are not compatible with BaseCamp software.

Legacy Devices Not Compatible With BaseCamp Software
  • eTrex® and eTrex® H outdoor handhelds
  • eTrex Vista®, eTrex Legend®, eTrex Venture®, eTrex Mariner®, eTrex Summit®, and eTrex Camo® outdoor handhelds
  • Foretrex® 101 and Foretrex® 201 outdoor navigators
  • Geko 201 and 301
  • Rino® 110, 120, and 130 outdoor handhelds
  • GPS 72 and 76
  • GPS 12, 12MAP, 12CX, and 12XL
  • GPS II™, II+, GPS III®, III+, and GPS V™ GPS navigators

For more information on legacy device compatibility, see Related Content.

Note: Third-party RS-232 to USB converter cables can be used to connect serial devices to modern computers lacking serial ports, however, this does not make those devices compatible with Garmin BaseCamp software.

Check Device Interface Settings

To communicate with a computer, a Garmin Mode device should be set to Garmin or Garmin Serial in Interface Settings.

To check interface settings, reference the Owner's Manual

Are Garmin Mode Drivers Installed on the Computer?

If you have previously installed Garmin WebUpdater or Garmin Express™ software, the Garmin drivers should already be installed on your computer.

Drivers for Garmin Mode devices can also be installed separately if needed. For help, see - Download and Installation of Garmin Mode Device Drivers.

Check the Cable Connection

Connection issues caused by a damaged cable or port can prevent a Garmin device from being detected by BaseCamp software. Use the following suggestions to troubleshoot cable connection issues.

  • Try a different USB port on the computer
  • Check for a loose connection or damage to the pins of the cable
  • Test the cable with a different USB device known to work
  • Try a new USB data cable
Note: Some USB cables support charging only and will not transfer data.

Close Other Garmin Applications

Other programs on the computer may be actively communicating with the Garmin device preventing BaseCamp software from recognizing it.

If any of the following Garmin applications are running, close them so that only BaseCamp is open.

Garmin Programs to Close When Using BaseCamp Software
  • Garmin Express™
  • Garmin WebUpdater
  • HomePort™
  • Point of Interest (POI) Loader
  • MapSource®
  • MapInstall™
  • xImage

Restart Computer and Try Again

If the Garmin device continues to not be found by BaseCamp software, or if it became disconnected through an interruption or time out, restart the computer with the device connected and try again.
